Hey guys, I have a 2017 Ram 1500 with the hemi. Looking to order the new dual mode exhaust that flowmaster just came out with. Anyone have it by chance or know anything about it?

I just installed one of the Flowmaster FlowFX Direct Fit Dual Mode Muffler systems on a 2018 RAM 1500 last week. It's a pretty cool setup that was not difficult to install.

The part number I used is P/N 717900

The kit appears to be well thought out and it works really well. The sound is excellent on a stock 5.7 HEMI in my opinion.

I was truly impressed at how the whole system fit. Everything lined up in the factory exhaust hangers and the overall fit was
dead-on.

How much louder than stock was it when the 3 inch dump was closed?

When I was running this truck on the dyno, at idle with the 3" dump closed, it was 8db louder than the stock muffler. It has a nice, mellow sound at idle. With the dump valve open, at idle it was 17db louder and you can definitely hear the difference. Under WOT with the valve closed it sounds like a HEMI with no cats and a Flowmaster Super 10 muffler to me.

Oh nice, I just don’t want something that’s going to wake up all my neighbors on startup every morning since I live in a development. Which is why I thought having dual mode would be nice

Either that or exhaust cut outs. Not sure what the flowmaster setup costs, but sounds like it's somewhat the same idea.

$600 for a wireless push button setup from flowmaster. Push of a button for a 3 inch dump before the mufflers.

You are correct in your thinking. It's just like having a wirelessly controlled exhaust cutout except the cutout is built into the muffler. It's a single in, dual out muffler. One outlet is the cutout and the other outlet is through the muffler. The kit I purchased purchased was $599.99 directly from the Holley website.

So is this essentially the outlaw kit with a built in exhaust cut out?

Sounds a little more pricey than a cutout (last I knew they were around $3-350?) but it sounds like a cool setup and I like the sounds of the design. Being in the northeast it would be nice to have the cutout protected like that.

Thanks for the info, I like the idea of it being in the muffler (better protected). I run cutouts on my 66 Buick but that thing only leaves the garage on nice days, but if I wanted to do something like that on my truck that sees all the snow/salt etc, I would look into this. I could definitely see cutouts having issues if they were on a daily driver in this part of the country, but if the cutout was protected like this setup, probably lasts a lot longer.

The only part I could see being a problem, was if something does happen to that cutout that needs servicing, you need to get a whole new setup? Or do they have some way to access the cutout in the event it needs to be looked at/worked on?

If something goes wrong with the cutout valve I believe there are some serviceable parts available from Flowmaster for repairs. I believe the actuator, wireless controller and FOB's are available in a seperate kit for repairs.

That's good to know, sounds like overall it's very appealing. I know on my old car, I love having "quiet" mode for around the neighborhood, but then being able to open it up and let it breathe a little. I've considered doing cutouts on my truck in the past but didn't end up doing it due to concerns of them holding up vs the elements. Wish this was around a few years ago.

Just out of curiosity was looking it up on the website looks like the kit is only out for the 5th gens so far. Are you planning on running a y-pipe to the stock duals to adapt it to your factory exhaust? Also on mobile so can't see signatures if im missing something here.

In the 2017 truck I installed this setup on, it had a slight drone at about 1850RPM at a steady cruise but other than that it sounds nice.

I'm going to revive this old thread - anyone who had this installed experience any problems with the valve? Any long-term reviews and updates?

I have a 392 with a small cam in my truck and I have a complete ARH exhaust system, 1 3/4" primaries, off-road y-pipe, 3" cat-back. The sound is good but it is more of a sport truck sound, not a pushrod v8 sound, which is fine for most of the time, but that muffler does a good job of muffling the chop of the cam, too good. Sometimes you just want to hear the chop of the cam and to let her eat, but with this muffler, that is a bit hard. So to satisfy the itch without waking up the kids every morning, I have installed an electric cutout but I have been through a couple of brands and they all rattle. I tried the Doug's brand which is a gate valve but the flat block-off plate would rattle with the pulses of the exhaust, warrantied a few and they all did it after a few days. I mean it has to have some tolerance to be able to rotate and in that tolerance, it rattles. I then tried the standard butterfly cutout. This is at least a single push-to-open or push-to-close controller with built in stops so when it gets too loose and rattles, I can open and close it and that usually works to tighten it up, but only for that commute and the next, never more. I usually wait to open and close it until the exhaust warms up to get a better seal with everything expanded but when it is loose and cold, it sounds terrible.

Anyway, I want to have my cake and eat it too, so I continue to look for a solution. I like the active exhaust on my mustang and this has a similar approach. I am hoping the valve/mechanism may be a bit more robust than the cutouts I've tried, I know on the mustang it is good.
