Former Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis now in charge of Ram trucks

Story by Tyler Anderson
3 min read

Car enthusiast and former CEO Tim Kuniskis has returned to Stellantis after a retirement hiatus of seven months. The move comes amid conglomerate turmoil that is affecting the company's operations across the globe. He’s back in charge of Ram, a familiar position where he previously pulled double-duty to manage Dodge at the same time. This time though, it looks to be all pickups.

Optimal timing, optimal man for the job

Kuniskis’s return comes at a time when the success of Stellantis is on a slippery slope. Sales are down across virtually all brands, shining a bad light on the corporation. The situation is so dire, that Stellantis management is getting a massive shuffle, including an ousted CEO whose role remains vacant at the time of this writing. If one man can pull everything back from the brink, he can.

“Today’s changes will enable us to operate in a structure that will drive the best outcomes for the region, unlock significant potential, and win in the market. A main lever is for the Ram brand to have its CEO singularly focused on that brand,” Stellantis said in an email statement noting his return.

Kuniskis has 32 years of experience to reflect on upon his return. A weathered leader who’s witnessed the company go through good and bad times, he finds himself once again in the driver’s seat, this time with greater challenges of steering the brand back in the right direction.

Sales down, ambitions high

Ram truck sales are down by double-digit percentages this year. What’s usually a straightforward path to high sales and profit margins is now affected by meddling management that has struggled to improve the bottom line. Kuniskis faces a tall order when it comes to claiming market share against General Motors and Ford.

At the same time, Stellantis is trying to hard launch its next-generation frame platform to accommodate future electric and gas utility vehicles. If Kuniskis can pull off the daunting task of righting the ship for Ram, he might find himself in the circumstance of becoming the global CEO of Stellantis.

In his time as the head of Dodge, he spearheaded the launch of the Hellcat models and previewed its first-ever all-electric muscle car, the Charger Daytona. Demand is allegedly high for the gas-powered Charger Sixpack that Dodge is moving up production to get it in people’s hands. Care to guess who planted the seed?

Final thoughts

Future models in the Stellantis portfolio are scarce, with two of them coming from Ram. The Ram 1500 REV and 1500 Ramcharger vehicles mark a crucial turning point for the brand, whose success may foretell the future of trucks as a whole.

It's not just lux trucks on the line, such as the Rivian R1T and GMC Sierra EV, but the commercial industry that relies on trucks to get from point A to B and carry heavy gear on a daily basis. It's important to streamline new technologies for commercial use, an industry that was valued at half a trillion dollars in 2022.

Just seven months of retirement gave Kuniskis big shoes to fill and for a lot of people inside the Stellantis corporate circle, he may be their only hope.

Watching TK's garage and OC on youtube, apparently Tavares was one of the only ones who wanted the hemi gone. It is apparently being tested in the new charger already and the V8's are all but guarenteed to come back soon. Yea buddy! Finally some exciting news from a spiraling death fall they've been in for a year and a half.

Just keep the 392/HC and fix the lifter/cam issue and also use the HC oil pump in both. I've had plenty of 5.7s and the SO is a better engine. Allow the 392/HO to be a option in lower trims too.

I watched TK'S garage as well. First time seeing his youtube channel, sounds like he has legit info. Hopefully Mr Kuniskis takes care of the short wiring harness issues , the inferior plastic parts on the inline 6 engine if they are going to keep it AND THEY INFORM THE PUBLIC THAT THOSE ISSUES ARE CORRECTED ESPECIALLY THE SHORT HARNESS ISSUE! If you read my previous post i did not buy buy a truck i ordered when it came in due to these problems and input on these problems from an industry insider, and i wanted it in the worst way. How are we to know when we can get a reliable vehicle if nothing is said?

Make them in America. . Stellantis needs to sell Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler back to Americans. They are just bleeding the money and heritage out of them to fund their propaganda climate goals. Good luck on the path they are on, 90% of your customers don’t care about your climate crap. . I’ll buy another truck when my hemi is made with American hands for a fair wage, until then I’ll just fix the one I have.

I couldn't agree more. Especially the climate change environmental garbage. That's just a controlling agenda and its gonna soon be a passing fad.

You don't need the HC oil pump in the 5.7.

No, it puts out more power, "better" has different meanings to different people and IMHO its not even close, the 5.7 is the better engine when it comes to reliability, simplicity, ability to DIY fix it, sound, "soul", no turbo lag, MPG while towing etc.

Allow the 392/HO to be a option in lower trims too.
Agreed. Ram needs to stop playing games. An engine is not a feature like HID, it's perfectly normal to want a simple tradesman with the most powerful engine available.

America wants the V8 engine. Update and bulletproof the Hemi. Fix the known and very common cam, lifter and manifold issues and make the trucks more affordable and they'll just about sell themselves.

The 5.7 Eagle had been around since 2009 it should have been updated to fix it's problems.
I can say that after owning a SRT 392 for several years just use it instead for the RAM 1500 not everyone wants or can afford a HC.

Glad to hear that someone who actually cares about cars/trucks is back. Let me give him a little tip… BRING BACK A RELIABLE V8 HEMI AND THEY’LL BUILD A STATUE OF YOU AT HQ.

Make them in America, and they’ll change the name of the company to Kuniskis motors.

I have no plans to buy a Hurricane, ever. A new platform with an updated Hemi? You at least have my (and thousand of Ram fans too) attention!

The HD trucks have missed an entire generation cab, etc. Get Cummins back on track.
