I don't think an aluminum front cover is going to yield any protection.
Time to upgrade to a good forged or cast cover. If you want to go frugal remove the damaged one and tap back into shape with a ball peen hammer and round flat chisel. No matter what, you need to remove the old cover to clean the gasket service and reseal. This is also a good time to check your wear on the ring gear and check for metal filings on the magnetand bottom of the diff. Fill with a good quality gear lube (not getting into that discussion here).
After rereading my post to DodgeDude I think my response reads a rather douche bag like and I didn't actually answer your question. So let me answer by saying it's open enough to rinse out any mud if you spray it directly with a hose. I've had mine on for several years and it's all good under there.
