5.7 is a thirsty beast. If fuel mileage is of any concern for a young driver for budgetary reasons, if they don’t need truck capability, don’t buy a truck. If still want a truck, plan on 15-17 with a young driver. oh and plan on rear tires too. The 5.7 will do epic burnouts with traction control off. Or so I’ve heard. I would never have done anything like that with my dads truck when I was a kid. And I’m sure my boys won’t do that with mine. Naturally!

20-23 mpg highway & 15 - 17 mpg in traffic with lights. Cruise control helps a bit on highway

Unless it is heavily modified, there is something seriously wrong with that truck. It needs to be gone over stem to stern. I do far better than that with a 6.4 2500. Even my 1996 V10 can hit 16 mppg on the highway occasionally but averages 14, still better than your numbers.

My 14 with stock size 20" tires consistently provides just over 20mpg hand calculated highway miles. If your kid wants one and gets it, I'm betting he is smart enough to drive it sensibly after the first few fill ups. So many here are talking about how it would not be good for a young man, but I'd make a large bet that many of those same "adults" posting are very heavy footed.

I get 19-20 on the highway..70-75 and maybe 13-14 in town but dont drive much in town. I bought mine to tow our travel trailer and for long trips such as skiing in the mountains. it is very comfortable on trips and carries more gear so we use it for that. the 5.0 first gear and 3.92 rear end make it a no go for stop and go driving. towing our 6000# travel trailer I usually get 8-10 at 68-69 depending on the terrain. I got 21.5 a couple of tanks while traveling in Wyoming and S. Dakota last year. I only burn regular.

I have a 2017 2wd standard cab. At a steady highway speed I'll get 19+ mpg but remember that's 2wd.
