Hmmm, vinyl coated hardboard looks like a cheap and viable option

So I crunched the numbers and think I should have about $1K left to mess with the ceiling. My plan was to have the drywall finished then paint it. I'm not doing all that sanding and mudding on the ceiling myself. Last garage, I was getting quoted $1K. Any ideas on alternatives?

find a crew in the area and have them do the mudding and taping for cash

True, when they start drywalling the new build next door, I can throw cash at them to do my ceiling. Should be much cheaper since they'll already be here and don't have to make separate trips to do additional coats just for me. This is why I like bouncing stuff off you guys, I feel like this is all **** that is pretty obvious and I should be on top of it, but with 50 things on my list, my brain power is a bit too scattered.

Nice, blown insulation is another item that has a crazy markup. I plan on spraying cellulose in the garage ceiling. There is ridge vents already, haven't checked for soffit vents yet, but it's an easy enough project to diy and save a few grand at least

Do you have any storage above the garage that you will need a folding stair installed to access the attic?

I thought about that with the last house too, even went as far as thinking up a motorized pulley system in the ceiling to drop a platform to bring up stuff to store in the garage 'attic', but in reality, I've had plenty of storage space in the basement. Now that this house has an unfinished basement and I have 2 ft deep cabinets, storage is of no concern and I'll just insulate the hell out of the ceiling.

You joke... but we had the builder remove the coat closet and put in a 'powder room' in-between the laundry room and garage. When he came back with price, it wasn't too bad and I jokingly said to my fiance that I could just put a ****** in the garage. Surprisingly, she was contemplating the idea, but I nixed it so we had the extra bathroom for guests and to not bother people when they're sleeping.

Yea I only mentioned that because one of my uncles has a huge garage, they have a bathroom in it with a ****** and regular toilet. I personally think it is a great idea, for as often one would spend in the garage/shop then you're not tracking through the house.

Yup, good looking out. Ceiling is already drywalled for firecode, I don't plan on tearing it out since I'd have to get a drywall lift.

I'd totally do it if I had the room for it, but at 600 sqft, I don't :(. Tracking stuff in with dark wood floors was another big reason for having the extra bathroom put in as soon as you walk into the house.

I realize that you are the one that is paying for the garage and all the amenities in it, but I was just wondering with all of our input and helping you spend more and more money with all our excellent ideas, the question remains-----Is this going to be sort of a "community" garage if any of us are ever in your neighborhood? :)

Absolutely, and if you stop by and help out during the construction phase, beer is on me!

Jw as said we are highly skilled at spending OP$. But as others have suggested. A community garage for our car/truck friends is one my great enjoyments. Roll around Master Cool for the summer, roll around propane heater for the winter. A honor help yourself refrig that is always full. One of the things I would like to suggest. Do not let us build a garage for you that is not comfortable and inviting to your friends. My previous garage was a bit OC. I went over the top. My fiends tell me that this garage makes them feel, more comfortable.
BTW, if you spend all your time listening to us,,,,it will never get done. LOL

I think my problem is that I am to impulsive and don't think things out completely when planning something like this. This looks to be a garage that is well thought out and functional. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of all the hard work and labor that goes into this build. The idea of polling members for ideas is great, it's always good if you can learn what works and what doesn't from others so you can reap the rewards and avoid the pain. Looking forward to watching this evolve.
