Hello everyone,

Not that this purchase will be done anytime soon, I would like to get some information on what to look for when buying a 2006 or 2007 Dodge Ram 1500. My ideal truck will be the 1500 quad cab, short bed, 4x4, 5.7l, with the fancies like the auto rear window slider and jazz like that. I have heard that the transmissions on any Dodge vehicle can prematurely die but others can run forever. My friends dad has a 2005 Dodge Durango with the 5.7l and he has 180,000 miles on with very minimal trouble. What types of things should be red flags or things to look for when purchasing a 2006-07 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5.7l.

Thanks
Lenny

only issue i have with the 06 is the head lights lol. have a big ass ugly amber strip at the bottom of the head light. but they can be switched out for 07 or 08 head lights that don't have the strip. as far as mechanical, only thing i have read or heard is the rears being iffy. haven't had an issue with mine. but changing the differential out for an aftermarket unit and doing a gear swap to 4:56 at the same time remedies that

Noting really serious to check for on the particular model your looking for. Most of the front seals for the 4x4 will wheep alill so dont be overly worried if you come across that. Check the oil levels trans level, ask for service records if alv.

I don't know much about the 2006's, but one thing I have read is that the seats easily stain with just water. So that might be something to watch for if you plan on getting one with cloth seats.

Transmissions on Dodge are not an issue since they they switched and made 3rd gen. Maybe even sooner. I have been told that this was corrected by making the trans stronger and also by making gas pedal computer controlled. If the computer says no that amount of gas will hurt transmission it only inputs a percentage. This is what my local dealer told me. He also says a way to make trans last longer is to back into spot so you can drive out it is a lot easier on transmission. I tow a boat 4 to 5 times a week in the summer and have never had an issue with new trans. Make sure you change the trans fluid and both filters on a regular basis and right when you buy it and all will be well for a long time.

IMO - to prolong your transmission life you should avoid going to O/D on WOT runs and 2nd prime downshifts. Also upgrading to a bigger trans cooler and scheduled maintenance will also help.

Anybody have any other info like leaks to watch for? Obviously cosmetic stuff can be seen but driveline problems or 4x4 issues really can't be seen.

there has been a recall on the front wheels ( lack of grease in the cv joints) bearings drying out, but that issue was for a select few, not all of them. Didn't lilfrogger post recalls somewhere?? search recalls or posts by; That I know will help ya.

Over 74,000 on my 06, and no big surprises. Very dependable!
20 plus mpg on the highway at times (thanks MDS)
