Having bought the butane unit, have you tried purging the butane out and buying better quality butane??
Look for something quadruple or quintuple refined.
I deal with this a lot in my butane lighters for my cigars; good butane isn't THAT hard to find, and makes a WORLD of difference.

I have a Weller soldering gun, but almost always grab my 35w iron unless it's big, then it often involves brass ends so a full size torch is needed anyway.

There is a lot to be said for technique, I get a tiny dab of liquid solder on the iron, then touch it to the oposing side of the joint to help the heat flow to the wire.

Then let the wire heat up, and the solder wick into the connection. Works fantastically!

Just don't forget to slide the heat shrink over first. Not that I've EVER forgotten...
