Got lazy and got broken in to

I installed a gun vault in my console. Plus, what I am carrying on me. I have commercial grade IA cameras (facial recognition, Plate recognition and audio) around the house. There are also cameras inside my truck that notify me of movement. I have mil spec night vision, Star Light and IR are wonderful things. They can run but they will only die tired!!!! And my dog will eat what is left on the ground. Not paranoid, just prepared!!!!!!!! Oh don't **** off my wife either.

That is All Interesting Reading. …and I don’t mean to be critical of your diligence….But, you will still feel violated when your stuff is stolen…. And IF and When you ever get it back…it will have been Abused and Mistreated by the Thieves.

Discouraging and Recording the thievery is not the same as Preventing it.
A gun-vault is merely another cheap lock in a vehicle to which they already have access.

BTDT. By the time the thief and the police and prosecutors were finished with it…. it was permanently damaged.

So, I’ve changed my modus operandi.

Also, I never want to interrupt an on-going theft and be confronted by my own firearm in the hands of the miscreant.

As a responsible (and jealous) owner, my firearms are Never left where theives or children will find access to them. They are either With Me….or locked up in a Serious-Safe….not merely a child-resistant cabinet that resembles one.

This is not intended as a critique…. but only as a recommendation.

I wish more people thought like this. Almost 50% of all stolen guns come from cars. I had a cop tell me once most of the guns they catch on criminals were reported stolen out of houses or cars and that most of the black market guns they seize are stolen. Just locking this stuff up would make guns way more expensive and harder to get for criminals.

@SwitcherLP Sorry to hear about your break in. If thief did hook up to your computer via obd2 then they could have added a fob to any one of those vehicles to then later come back and do a quick grab. AlphaOBD or similar can tell you how many remote fobs are programmed in your vehicle. If you've only ever had 2, and see 3 well you get the point.

If the miscreant did scan for fob codes, they would not have created a new fob (that would take a security bypass cable, scanner tool and possibly a code which even alfaobd couldn't, afaik, read from the vehicle).

Much more likely would be them copying an existing authorized fob code from the vehicle (which can be read without a security bypass cable) and then cloning the fob later (or right then if they were really trying to steal it)

Yup they can. I have taught my wife and kids to lock the doors with the button instead of the Fob. I always use the door buttons also. I have heard of key skimmers used in parking lots to pick up the code between the Fob and truck. I figure better safe than sorry.

I do that and now I am very glad I do. I use the door buttons and door access to unlock as well. Rarely ever use the fob. And I didn't know anything about the skimmers before this!

Lots of good ideas have been presented. While I believe some are better than others, I think the security you choose depends on your budget, the environment in which you live, and any state/county, or city laws regarding your rights when protecting personal property. I do believe that outlining in detail what you have done and what you are willing to do, on a public forum, is a mistake. My message is FA & FO.
