Albertan at at 5 F. Sweater goes on at -5 or so. What we call cold is -55, and yes, you can tell if you have shutters or not by how fast it warms up. You can also tell on the highway if you don't have them.

With your weather, I would keep the shutters too.

There's 2 sides to the shutters,just make sure you leave 1 top and 1 bottom shutter in place on each side,the middle ones you can remove.Removing just 2 isn't gonna do much,either leave them alone or remove all the middle ones.

I seem to remember the consensus that all 180 aftermarket tstats are crap, are there any decent options?

Recently, it seems that the Mr Gasket thermostat seems to be the most reliable. I installed a 160.
