I learned a lot towing by looking at tow ratings vs payload vs GVWR vs GAWR - you all know what I mean

I am a car guy at heart and in racing you always look at weight, low weight. More HP and lower weight = better.

So I am on another forum, a performance car forum. And they just do not believe that the door stickers are the car weight...

GVWR minus PAYLOAD = vehicle weight.

I am getting everything from that is an estimation, that does not include the driver allowance, etc...

So the truck guys want more and the car guys want less - it is comical.

For reference here is mine... very heavy :)

4663 GVWR
minus
0688 Payload
equals
3945 Vehicle Curb weight

I suppose everyone is welcome to stick their head in the sand or plug their ears about facts. One additional note about this is that from my understanding, the curb weight as you’ve calculated also assumes a full tank of fuel. That’s why it’s called “curb weight” and not “dry weight”.

Yep, the GVWR is calculated from curb weight which is Full fluids not dry weight.

EDITED TO CLEAR CONFUSION

I've also read conflicted stories as to if the 150 driver is included or not. That could. I know what I have available for my truck.

Yep, the GVWR is curb weight. Full fluids.

Sorry, but no, GVWR is the total weight that a vehicle is designed (and therefore, legally allowed for by a state) for.

It doesn't matter where the weight comes from. If you get weighed by the DMV they don't care whether the weight comes from the solid structure of the vehicle, fluids (engine oil, fuel, whatever) or cargo. If you are over the registered and/or mfr declared GVWR, they will (OK, can - probably will) ticket you. Get stopped with a half full tank? You may squeak by even though 2 hours ago you would have gotten busted.

Best thing to do is get your vehicle weighed with all accessories and a full tank, and consider the difference between that and your GVWR your maximum payload.

We recently traded in our old class 6 truck (which was really way over-rated for what we use it for) for a class 4 one. There was a lot of speculation as to what we would be able to carry with it. The answer? Put all our "stuff" in it, fill the tank, and get it weighed. Most of what we haul has "standard" calculated weights, so we have established maximums by product type, but we also have a scale built into one of our forklifts, so we can double-check before heading out on the public/regulated highways.

the GVWR is the curb weight (which includes all fluids - this is regulated) and the max payload. The stickers on the door are not a guess, it is printed from your build sheet at the factory.

My car full fluids weighs 3945
I can put up to 688 lbs of occupants and cargo while at a full tank

Obviously your fuel goes down and not every vehicle has the max fluids in the vehicle so the weight can vary, slightly. My car hold about 114lbs of fuel.

My point of the post you quotes is the GVWR is calculated from Curb weight not Dry weight

You are either misinformed or misunderstanding.

GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

It's the maximum allowed weight of the vehicle. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE the weight comes from - dry vehicle, wet vehicle, wet vehicle with passenger, tire chains, accumulated snow/ice, cargo, etc.

If you get stopped by the DOT they weigh your vehicle. If you're over the GVWR (or registered weight, but they are generally the same) you get a ticket. If not, OK - just hope they don't get you for something else...

I am neither misinformed or misunderstanding I understand what GVWR is.

The entire point of this thread was that if you take the GVWR and the payload sticker you can get the vehicle curb weight from the factory.

If you read the OP, you will see.

That may have been the OP of the OP, but it's not where it went. JMO
