Has anyone here installed a back up camera?

My wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year. I couldn't think of anything. Then I thought of how it might be a little easier to hitch up my boat with a back up camera.

There are a ton online, but I would like to hear from someone here that actually owns one that likes it. I need a brand and model recommendation. Thanks!

All the best,
Glenn

I have the factory Nav head unit in my truck. Looking for a stand alone unit. Would prefer a small monitor instead of the rear view mirror type, as I have a large wide-view mirror installed and I like it. If need be though, I'd swap the mirror.

All the best,
Glenn

I'll be getting mine hooked up this week(possibly tomorrow)... mine has the hard cable that runs from the camera to the unit instead of the transmitter.

I'll report back and let ya know...

Anyone else with some actual experience with back up cameras?

schroederMP,
Did you ever get yours installed?

I have a very similar unit to this one..

I do NOT really like it, to be honest. The #1 reason is because that the mirror portion is a lightly smoked glass. It isn't a "true" mirror, because the monitor is behind the glass.

At night, it's fine. But during the day, there's so much glare on the mirror (reflections from hell) that you cannot see the backup camera worth a ****.

schroederMP,
Congrats on the new ride. What are you getting?

Rogan68,
Awesome. Exactly the kind of info I need - good or bad, I want to know. Your response is a huge help, even if it wasn't a positive experience. I had a feeling that would be the case with that one. Thanks.

My wife was going to get me one for Christmas, but I haven't found a single site that gave any of the aftermarket ones a good review. Most had reception issues (wireless) or glare on the screens (mirror mount) or bad monitors that didn't last a year, etc.... Disappointing, but I'm glad to find out now, vice after my wife spent money on one and we found out it didn't work well. She's got one (factory) in her 2011 Jeep. Between that, the A/C leather seats, and her Nav system, I've got "truck envy" when it comes to her interior.

All the best,
Glenn

Glenn,
I've looked into adding a radio (such as Pioneer) with BT, NAV, and B/U camera. I've found one, but it ~ $1000. Might try to get this after the first of the year.

My truck is 80% work truck, and I rely on NAV for for deliveries, as well as the BT, and backup camera for hooking up the trailer.

I'll be able to expense it, as well as get rid of the windshield Garmin and BT headset. It'll clean up the interior a good bit, clutter-wise.

Rogan68,
I thought about replacing the radio, because I really hate the factory systems they put in these things. My GPS was out of date the day I bought the truck in 2007 - brand new off the lot. A year later, I get this notice saying they will sell me an "update" CD for my GPS for $150. Heck, for that price, I'd be better off getting a Garmin. I called to ask what the new update would cover, but they couldn't tell me. I had to buy it to find out. No thanks on that one!

The radio's are expensive for what I'd want though. I'd have to do a lot of wiring to bypass that factory amp, etc... If I were to do all of that, I'd probably just go all out and put in a head unit with back up cam, GPS, DVD, etc... plus all new speakers, amp and sub. But I don't know how long I'll be keeping this truck. It seems that every time I finally get a truck the way "I want it", I end up selling it for something new with a bunch of new issues. :emotions122:

My plans (at least right now) are to keep this truck as long as possible and use it for my tow vehicle for my bass boat / hunting truck. If my wife's Jeep keeps going as strong as it is now, I'm seriously considering a 5.7 4x4 version of the GC for my next vehicle. I'm just not sure how well it would pull my boat. I looked at the Durango's too - but I don't like them as much as the JGC.

But I digress.... :)

All the best,
Glenn
