I currently have an OEM set of projector headlights on my 2015 Ram. Low beam 9012; high beam 9005.
My driver side assembly is allowing moisture in and also shows signs of possibly charring in the projector due to cheap halogen or LEDs previous to my ownership.
I have acquired a mint set of 2017 OEM headlight assemblies and noticed that the low beam is now a 9005 as well as the high beam. I figure these are pretty much plug and play wire my current setup due to AlfaOBD but what was the reasoning behind the change away from 9012 to 9005 for the low beams? My 9005 high beams are RIDICULOUS so I can’t imagine what they’ll look like in the low beam projector.

Also- and compatibility issues I’m not aware of because just by looks, it’s the same assembly…

Thank you!

My '16 projectors have the 9005's in both high and low. The lows are not as near as bright as the highs when I switch. The lows have a very defined cut off line so are easy to aim to avoid blinding oncoming vehicles.
I have LEDs in both high and low.

The reason for the moisture inside of the headlight housing is, that at some time,
someone may have removed the headlight housing & moved one of the VENT openings
without realizing it.

I never found out just what the Vent setting was
If you watch the video, you will notice 2 brownish plastic knobs on the back of the light, they are about 1" diameter

Other housings were never sealed up the way that they should have been when they were made

If you look at the projector housings, the low & high beam sections are completely different.

The low beam has a focussed lense that concentrates the light and contributes to a sharp cutoff line.

The high beam is wide open with a back reflector.

You can't expect light propagation from these completely different areas to be that similar.

My truck also has projector light housings with 9005s that I have upgraded to LEDs.

And, the LEDs are magnificent.

I have Fahren for low beams and Auxito for high beams. The LED low beams are far brighter than the original halogen high beams.

Fortunately, the low beam cutoff line is quite sharp, I verified they're at the correct height to not trouble most oncoming vehicles.
