So, the glass in my mirrors have been changing color, getting darker, and just looking worse and worse over the last few years. Especially the passenger side, which is turning almost black in the lower left corner, with brown lightning bolt looking streaks radiating up and too the right.

Today I decided to remove them to get the part#, and look up some replacements.

About 250$. Each!

So, instead of that, I pulled them apart and used a plastic trim removal tool to separate the glass cover plate from the actual mirror, then cleaned out the former dimming fluid turned varnish, with some of the wife's Barstool Cleaner stuff that she uses to clean her AllClad pans.

Then I removed the electrical wires and reassembled them. I used some VHB double sided tape to fill in the gap between the mirror and bezel, where the cover plate used to be. I'm about 11$ into the repair, for the cost of a roll of VHB tape at Oreilly's.

Anyway,

Since I removed the auto-dim stuff, got the expected codes and deactivated those features with AlfaOBD. I cleared all the codes and all seems to be working correctly.

The following codes were present after I finished the delete and reassembled everything:

So, the U110E, U0401 and U113D-00 are all from turning the truck on with the mirror harness disconnected and window switch module disconnected. When the ambient temp sensor and switch module dropped off the network, those modules set codes.

The B1F05-13 codes were expected, as I deleted the auto-dim feature before I reinstalled the mirrors.

But, I have no idea what the "Mirror Approach Light" is. Obviously because it set the code B2861-15, it is a feature that uses or is part of the auto-dim circuit, which is now gone.

Obviously, I disabled those three features with AlfaOBD, since the hardware has been removed. But, what is it? Anyone know?

BTW: The mirrors look really good, all cleaned up with that auto dim goop cleaned out.

Sorry the pic sucks, but it's pretty much dark and rainy here about 13 months out of the year. As you can tell but the green moss growing out of my window weatherstrips.

It's the light on the bottom of the mirror

The puddle light?

That has nothing to do with the auto dim circuit. I disabled it for nothing.

That code must have also set because I had the mirror connectors upplugged and switched on the truck. I need to go re-enable that with AlfaOBD.

Edit to add: I went out and sure enough, no puddle lights. I re-enabled them and they are working again. Thanks!

Oh, after I got finished with this 11$ repair, I was looking for a place to put the rest of that 11$ roll of vhb tape.

Somewhere I wouldn't forget. So next time I need it, in a few years, I'd remember where to look, of course.

I went to put it in the center little mini drawer, in the upper part of my DeWalt tool box, and found 2 more rolls already in there, from some long forgotten previous job.

So, it cold have been a free repair.

That VHB tape is good stuff.

At least yours was lost inside a box, I lost my head bolts and timing chain in plain sight.
