Hello everybody!

I'm new around here but not new to forums. I sold my 01 Ranger and picked up a 06 Quad Cab 5.7 Big Horn a couple days ago and couldn't be happier!

I bought the truck with 67xxx miles on her and got what I think was a decent deal because she needs a little front end work. There is a very pronounced cluck up front especially when you roll over a speed bump.

My main question is where should I start the search for the cluck? I haven't been able to jack the truck up yet to check ball joints but I did check the sway bar and it seems good however there is slight play on the drivers side. There also looks to be some oil around the passenger strut.

Any help would be appreciated I'm going to try and do the work over the weekend. That's all for now just trying to get the major mechanical out of the way so I can start with the fun mods!

BTW it's FRIDAY! Enjoy your weekend! :happy160:

welcome to RF. My first question would be do you know the front end is stock height? not lowered or lifted?

Clunk over bumps is usually sway bar links. Slide underneath it and grab and wiggle them and see if there's any play. Hope this helps and welcome to RF!

Well I took the End links off and had to drive back to the parts store because they gave me the 2wd version (my fault for not checking them). However that did give me the chance to see if the noise was sill there and it is actually worse now. I'm thinking struts, they look to be covered in oil which is probably not a good thing.

Its a rattling cluck noise if that helps clear things up a little. Like when you hit a bump it will cluck and then cluck a few more times as it settles back down. Make sense?

Again thanks for any help.

If its struts, and you plan to level. You might as well buy some bilstien 5100 adjustables and get it all done at once. ;)

Welcome. When my struts were blown, the truck squeaked really bad, but it sounds like yours may be blown and leaking.

I think I've had the rattling clunk noise you are describing, on my truck that ended up being the lower control arm.

I just recently had most of my front end rebuilt, so I've become familiar with all types of squeaks, rattles and clunks LOL

Check the bushings on the control arm. That's what was bad on mine and I had to get a new control arm because they couldn't get just the bushing.

A clunk over bumps could also be ball joints. These can be checked by, well, after you change your struts take it in for an alignment. They will tell you if any other components are bad. Meanwhile, while you have the front end in the air changing other stuff, grab your tires at the 12 and 6 position and check for play in the bearings.
