I am in the market for a pick truck since I bought some property in the hill country of TX. However, I am conflicted between two trucks that are different with each offering their advantages. I like the 2020 Power Wagon and its off-roading superiority, but I do shy away because of its size and mpg, also wonder about their reliability. I also like the Rebel ecodiesel, but wonder about its reliability and maintenance cost since it is a diesel. I don't at the moment really have anything to tow, but that could change in the future, and I don't see myself towing anything extremely heavy. Offroading will be minimal and not something I would be doing as a hobby, but I like these two trucks the most.

So here are my questions:

Power Wagon:

  1. Is the Power Wagon impracticable as a daily driver, especially in the city?
  2. Reliability?
  3. Maintenance cost and fuel cost compared to the ecodiesel. Do they even out, or does the ecodiesel still come out on top after a few years of ownership due to fuel savings?

Rebel Ecodiesel:

  1. Reliability of the third Gen engine?
  2. Real-world MPG 4x4?
  3. Same as above, the fuel cost savings make the difference-making the Rebel more affordable. I have heard that the oil changes are expensive, and general maintenance on this diesel can be costly.

Last question any dealership recommendations and salesperson you guys trust?

Recently read a article of the ecodiesel pulling like 35mpg verified gas savings alone will make it cheaper to own

Not sure how you feel about driving, but Geoff Cannon at Dodge City in McKinney, Tx is the guy I deal with.

As for which truck, you’re talking 1500 vs 2500 here. Personally, I’d go 2500 but would shy away from the Power Wagon for its 1400# payload alone. It’s an off-roader not a worker which will get old fast if you’re working your property.

The 1500 EcoDiesel is a solid choice but again, your payload is on the lean side.

I’ve got property and went the 2500 route and picked up a Tradesman CC 4x4 Hemi with 3100# payload.

I’m not trying to sway you one way or another, just giving you my take.

Personally, I'd get a 1500 with hemi, but, of your two choices and how you said you'd use the truck I'd opt for the 1500 Ecodiesel.

I live about an hour from Mckinney and checked out their website. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have any power wagons for sale.

I appreciate all the responses. What do you think the cost of ownership would be between the two trucks after 5 yrs? I know that diesel maintenance is more expensive and once you add DEF I can't really see the savings of owning this type of pickup compared to the power wagon Am I wrong? Anybody good at math?

The eco will get 20 mpg more there is your savings. This isn't comparing apples to apples

You are comparing 2 totally different trucks.

The only thing the same is the wheel style the tire tread and the grille.

The eco diesel will return the best MPG...but not So much if you are nit stretching its legs on the highway

The Powerwagon isnt really any longer than a crew cab REBEL...but it sits a bit higher and the hood goes into the sight line more.

The Rebel will have a larger cab...but a smaller bed.

If you are buying 2020...the Powerwagon can be equiped with surround/360 view...the REBEL can not.

They both have pretty much the same options.

Except the Powerwagon gets a front locker and disconnecting sway bars and winch.

The REBEL and the Powerwagon will have about the same payload and the REBEL will actually have a slightly larger towing capacity...but the Powerwagon will handle the trailer better.

There is so much that can go into this debate.

It seems like you do not need either trucks capacities...but you want the look and the possibility of the capacities.

I think either would do you fine. But my Vote is Powerwagon.

1) Hemi 1500, higher level like Laramie, etc...
2) 2500
3) ED.... Not sure they got the problems worked out on the ED from gen engines 1 and 2.

Maintenance costs on the EcoDiesel will be a little more from my experience. I used to own a 2015 EcoDiesel. The oil is a little more expensive, and you'll need to replace the fuel filter something like every other oil change (I remember the exact replacement interval, so someone correct me on that if I'm wrong). I don't remember the cost of the fuel filter, but I don't think it was that bad. DEF is a non-issue. I only had to fill the tank (8 gal capacity) at each oil change interval, and at around $3 per gallon was much cheaper than filling the fuel tank one time. I don't see a huge difference between them as far as maintenance costs go. Like Ohio5pt7 said, the real difference in ownership is the much better MPG you'll see with the oil burner 1500.

Nah go for the Power wagon dude. But i guess i might be biased.

If you arent going to use the PW offroad, then get a 1500. as others have said. The power wagon is for 1 thing. off roading.

With that said. i daily drive my Wagon. i have had it almost 3 months, and have already put over 11k miles on her. I drive it EVERYWHERE. city, country, whatever. only in the small chase ATM drive-thru places do i get nervous. But she always fits (barely).

On some road trips up to CO i can get 16-18mpg. Driving around town and to work, 11-13mpg. it helps that is has a larger tank. but could still use more TBH.

Or, get a non-PW 2500 6.4 Hemi with a higher trim level (if you like the comfort and gadgets). You'll be ready to tow a reasonably sized/weight trailer if and when that day comes and you'll have a higher max payload. My .02 cents.

I will be traveling to the hill country of TX now that I have property there, but again perhaps the added maintenance of the eco-diesel won't add up to savings when compared to the Power Wagon. It might break even....
