I just received a USB fob yesterday with an update from FCA for my 8.4.

I figured I would try it as the recent OTA updates have been failing.

It gets to module 11 (Sierra Wireless) and fails.

Then it restarts the update process waiting for the USB to be inserted.

I've tried countless times to no avail.

I disconnected the battery terminal overnight, and this morning, it came up asking for the USB media.

All functionality is gone.

I really don't want to take it to the dealer as it is out of warranty.

Any help on getting the system out of this update loop would be MOST APPRECIATED!

Who designed this crappy software???

You should download the 17.43.01 update to a flash drive, then update to 17.43.01 first.

After youve done that, use the thumbdrive from uconnect and update to 18.45.01

Tell me what year truck and which radio you have and ill help you find the correct download.

Is your radio the ra3 or ra4?

If your radio came with Nav from the factory its an RA4.

If it came without nav, and nav was activated after the fact by the dealer, or not activated at all, its its RA3.

Unfortunately the getting to Sierra part then hanging indicates there might be an issue with the radio hardware. The update is just bringing the symptom to light.

You can try Ken's suggestion above, but if you keep seeing the issue you might need to get the radio repaired or replaced.

I had the same thought, but i saw a post recently from someone whose update froze at the sierra part, and he was able to get through it by updating to an intermediate version first. I think he used 17.43.01

I dont remember where i saw that post though.

Thank you Ken!

I should have written down the current (pre-update) version as I checked before starting the update.

I have the NAV - everything is stock from the factory.

I noticed the OTA updates were failing, so when this came in the mail yesterday, I thought I'd give it a try.

I don't want to get the head unit replaced as everything is (well was) working fine. I cannot imagine how much that head unit would cost along with the install.

I just wish I had never inserted the USB FCA sent in the mail. At least the OTA updates wouldn't get stuck in a loop when they failed.

My update failed at the sierra update as well. Second time around it worked though.

I would try downloading the update from the uconnect site and try a different USB drive. Preferably an older small one (4-8Gig?) if you have one laying around.

What year is your truck? The 17.43.01 updates are model year specific.

Ive figured out that you have an RA4 radio. Once i know which model year your truck is, i can give you a link to the 17.43.01 update

I'm using a SAN disk 32GB FAT32. I downloaded this version off of the Uconnect site:

UPDATE AVAILABLE
Your 2014 equipped with the system qualifies for the following software updates
Update 1:
Uconnect_VP4,18.45.01-My13-17
SERVICE BULLETIN ID: FOTA AND POPUP
RELEASE DATE: 2019-10-09

Then when it got stuck in the loop, disconnected the battery overnight (did not work), and tried with the USB that FCA sent me a few days ago. That failed in the same spot.

Started the update this AM.

Came out ~90 mins later. Windshield wipers halfway up the windshield, 'wait 2 - 5 minutes' displayed on screen.

Tried to start the truck, service messages came up, CEL, gauges flickered, and kaput. Will not start.

Disconnected battery, same result.

Disconnected battery, inserted FCA update disk. Went to 73% of module 11, and stuck.

Truck will not start.

Whatever the 17.x version did or did not do, now I have to have my truck towed to a dealership.

This really sucks.

I called FCA & opened a case, but they essentially said 'Gee, we've never seen this before, you need to get it to a dealer.'

It's parked in front of the garage, blocking my other vehicle which works.

I'm screwed. I should have never attempted this update process.

Now I'm going to be out hundreds of dollars getting the truck on a rollback to the dealer.

:(

Thats terrible. I have no idea how a radio update could have possibly resulted in that.

Have you tried removing the battery terminals, touching them together, then trying to start the truck?

Or possibly pulling the radio fuse?

I do appreciate your help Ken. The outcome just sucks.

I have just pulled the positive terminal thus far.
