First post here looking for some experiences. Had my Quad 04 off road 3.92 gears, since new and it has ~6x,*** on it now. New it had plenty of power and did around 13/16 mpg.
I have done all services tranny, diffs, tunes, etc on time and recently did factory copper plugs, airfil, fuel treatments, cleaned MAF,tranny filter, etc. But,I'm getting like 10/12 mpg and it has slow response and seems much quieter even with its single exhaust, than it should. It seems to run fine,no smoke, noises, misfires, codes, but something ain't right.
The only mods made were going from factory 275/70/17 to 285/70/17 tires due to costs, which might account for 1-1.5?mpg diff in readings on OD,but it still had great power when first swapped. It still has power to pull a bobcat.tractor and sometimes a 14,*** crawler, but not response like it had.
I had even took it on a ~1000 trip to DC hauling a 900lb bike w small 9' trailer to blow it out,and max mpg on cruise was 12.
Looking for a possible way to increase performance/mpg that won't cost more than its worth. Wondering if the computer itself could be going out of adjustment,or if a bad sensor could be causing it to run this way,I have never had computer adjusted/checked unless the dealer did it during services.
If you have any ideas that might help I'd appreciate it,plan on keeping it till it's a rust bucket(dealer wants it in trade)and then some, because I like it and its paid for.

You cat might be broken inside, not allowing for proper flow (the matrix isn't lined up right).

Get under the truck (ONLY ONCE IT'S COOLED DOWN) and beat on the cat with the ball of your palm a few times, if you hear anything rattling around, order you a high flow (or remove it) cat.

o2 sensors do get old and crusty and when they go, fuel economy typically goes with them. If you're handy you can change them yourself.

Thanks,

Cat could be an issue, but at 60,000 it shouldn't. Have a ranger 3.0 that would shudder and sputter that turned out to be a clogged cat,but its has 270,000.
I 'll check it.
Already replaced one O2 sensor awhile back after code came on,forgot which one, have to check and see how many it has,but don't have another code yet.

Best to replace with OEM sensors also. The aftermarkets work for awhile but seem to still cause issues

You mentioned cleaning the MAF, you meant "MAP", but you might have damaged it trying to clean it. I would replace it. Have you removed and cleaned the throttle body? Also mentioned it being quieter, this sounds like you aren't making power or most likely a collapsed muffler or cat. Reset the PCM, which sometimes helps.

I checked the cats, muffler and resonator today and heard nothing loose, but will have to weld up a pinhole weld seam defect on a cat the dealer refused to replace earlier,as it wasn't leaking yet. I remember on a 350 rebuild that I heard all kinds of rattling on reconnecting the pipes and told the boss cat was bad,he said send it out. Didn't take a week it was back and could barely idle it was so clogged.
It has 2 up/2 down O2's on the y pipe and I can tell I replaced the one already,as well as the EGR after they coded. Think I'll hold off on them a bit w no codes yet. Think the main ones that effect mileage most are the upstream ones.

I have to remember my ford has the MAF,Dodge has the MAP,which come to think of it could be causing some fuel/perf issues the way it acts,at ~$30 I guess its time to replace it. Also thinking on a new IAT, as it could also be involved in computer metering wrong and is ~$15. On 04 I believe map is in plenum near alt under air box and iat in in airbox.
I sprayed throttle body a few times but not lately, think It needs to be removed this time for a better cleaning.
Well, now that you've given me work to do,I'll see if it has any positive effects and get back.

Thanks

I was surprised that the new SRT IAT (extended probe) is only $4 at the dealer. The parts guy even mentioned that he didn't think Dodge had a sensor under $40.

Good plan.. check for vacuum leaks too, my 03 Dakota had 3 small-ish leaks from old vacuum hoses and fixing those gave it a better idle.

O2s are pretty reasonable and a lot of times cheaper at the dealer, If that's what it turns out to be. As for the MAP sensor sensor, again I'd stick with the dealer. Chrysler and Dodge's vehicles are super voltage sensitive, that many times aftermarket sensors either don't help or make it worse.
Their are however some exceptions, I'm running an IAT sensor from Advance on my Ram with no issues. But that's not a real crucial sensor either

The factory SRT IAT extended one is only $4 at a dealer.
