Just watched this vid from The Fast Lane Truck. 2wd Ram 1500 Ecodiesel getting high 32 MPG. Can the ED owners confirm the accuracy of this? Also, as I'm interested in comparing apples to apples, can 4wd ED owners chime in on their ED MPG? Supposedly, they added about 400+ pounds to the bed to try and compare it to the Ford 2.7 Ecoboost 4wd mileage.

I'm keeping an eye on both the Ram 1500 ED and the Ford F150 2.7 EB for my next truck. Hopefully withing the next 18 months.

Thanks!

A buddy I work with has the ED 4wd. He was saying the other day that just going back and forth to work he gets about 23-24. He said on the trip he just went on, he was getting about 31 on the highway.

Here's some guidance from one of our own:

Also, I can't find it now, but there was a link to a video where a couple guys picked up a brand new EcoDiesel-equipped RAM and drove it halfway across the country. They got a legit hand-measured 40MPG with no tricks (other than driving the speed limit).

That's incredible. The best they could hope for on the Ford 2.7 EB motor is 23 MPG highway. If the ED's are getting an honest 30 MPG highway, that's going to be tough for anyone to beat. Especially in a 4wd vehicle.

The only thing that kept me away from an ED Ram was the cost difference between gas and diesel fuel, also cost of DEF, and premium for the engine and the payback takes a long time to get back. I really wanted one but dang they make it rough to make the jump.

Regarding the difference in cost between diesel and gasoline, if you compare an ED to a Ford 2.7 Ecoboost, as long as diesel stays within a full 30% of the cost of gasoline, it's going to be a win for the ED. The ED is getting AT LEAST 30% better fuel mileage than the best you can expect from the Ford. Regarding the cost of the engine? $5k is a tough pill to swallow. But again, if you're comparing apples to apples, a loaded up Big Horn is going to cost about the same MSRP as a Ford F150 XLT loaded up.

And regarding DEF, the RAM only holds 8 gallons. So, at just shy of $3 a gallon now you're talking $24 every 8500-10,000 miles. That's pretty easy to justify. To me it is anyway.

ED is cheaper it's just going to take a long time to be on the plus side of the equation. I believe it like 6-7 years but that was why I was comparing the Hemi to ED. BTW I have hear grumbling that the Ford numbers are not that close to EPA numbers. Research that as well. Trust me I would love another Ram owner. Just make sure all your numbers add up. Check Fuely.com. See what that looks like.
