Hi so I'm going to start off say my first time on a forum have always worked on my own stuff but bought a 2017 as family use it's a 6.4 auto that now has 160 k and now seems like it's taking more rpm 2100 to get it moving shifts don't slip but seems to almost gurgle around 1500 rpm it's newer than anything else I've dealt with so need advice my gut says torque converter but before I start blowing money I would try this thanks

It’s normal, i have the same transmission behind my 4.7L and it’s normal for the tranny to act like ****. The RFEs aren’t known for shifting great, and if you have a extremely high mileage one behind a engine that’s badly in need of a tune up, it’s gonna act horribly. When was your last tune up?

Maybe, maybe leaky VB and/or bad springs. Invest some time into these vids, you have the rfe yes? So look at the valve body upgrades, Im not saying one is better then the others, you research that. But, valve body upgrades on a HD truck with a rfe is just going to be par for the course, you need all that, all those upgrades. It can save your transmission. I'd say to maximize value maybe it should have been done a while ago, now it's hard to gauge value. If it were my truck I'd do it regardless HD with 160k miles, worst case scenario you need a new tranny, the VB upgrades wont need to be redone. Look at solenoid upgrade as well. plate kit and tune, with springs etc, the whole enchilada.

I'm not speaking in code to get you to google it, I just don't know. I heard there have been some issues ats in the past, but some say those were solved. The one that has the best reputation is sharadon, but they stopped doing these. Sorry I can't be more help, transgo and some other ones out there. I'd be happy to tell you if I knew, if I was you I might email sun coast and ask them what they recommend. You need to decide how far you will go, tune up trans psi which will take a plate upgrade, and a couple grand, or just get a transo go gasket and stop the leaks, maybe add a piston upgrade with rings. If you just want to maybe fix the issue and leave the systematic weaknesses? Or is this truck your baby that you want to drive until the cockroaches inherit the erf?

first things first, watch those two vids, every guy with an rfe should watch those.

That’s good. The whole thing with the RFE is that they’re always sloppy, when they come out of the factory, guess what, they’re sloppy. My RFE does so many strange things that no other transmission i’ve driven has done, that it gets to be alarming. For instance, sometimes it “misses” the 6th to 5th downshift, makes the engine rev up to 1.9K (it gains speed while this is happening, so i don’t think anything is broken) and then goes into gear. No, i don’t like the transmission, but it moves. Maybe not well, but it moves.

Just one of the many sacrifices to make with RAM in general, i could’ve gotten the Hemi with the 8 Speed but knowing my luck the Hemi would be knocking like a Jehovah’s witness and needing a full rebuild by now. Or i could’ve gone with the Gen 1 Pentastar, and had some of the same head issues that plagued the 5.7L. Sorry for the rant haha

Find a good transmission shop, they can plug in and watch what's happening with the transmission. I had a transmission that started to slip in a '98 van, I was driving the vehicle while the guys from the transmission shop watched his computer. I think the rebuild was $1300 and it was warrantied for 2yrs/24Kmiles

That’s only the 65RFE that has these issues, it’s a very strange transmission. For instance, you can’t mechanically boost line pressure in it, only electronically via a tuner or a line pressure booster that plugs into the side of it. The 8 speed is a much better transmission.
