I got rear ended in the most outlandish way Friday afternoon.

I took the truck in this morning to a dealership for an estimate and I feel like the guy writing the estimate was more worried about saving money than making the truck right.

It's a 2013 3500 HD cummins dually with 21K miles on it.

He told me that they will put a used truck bed on it since the body style isn't the same as the new ones, which was a surprise to me. Is this true?

Advice on dealing with insurance company and repair shops would be much appreciated.

Every insurance company is different every body shop is different. My experience: I high centered my fj on a curb, body shop wrote the original estimate using used rims. Once the rims arrived the shop manager called and told me they looked like crap and that he was ordering brand new ones. My insurance company was great and basically just sad send us the bill.

Get several estimates, demand NEW bed...it has 21k, and ask for diminished value on your truck to person causing accident's insurance. Because if it shows up on a report later, you could get less for your truck.

on a side note, that trailer's kinda small for hauling that truck, also the tongue weight might be a little high?? :roflsquared:

Seriously though, (and I seriously hope you really WEREN'T trying to haul that truck), follow Greygoose's advise. Demand new parts in the repair and diminished value.

tell your insurance company if they want to put somebody else s used parts on then you should pay your premiums with somebody else s used check you are entitled to new genuine parts if they say different tell them you will get back to them after you talk to your states insurance commissioner and then follow thru you reciece results and deal with penske ins not the other driver
i beleive this to be good advice based on experiances i have had hopefully they apply in your state

So how do you get the repair shop to order new parts? I'm hearing that the repair shops wont order new parts. That's their racquet. They want to buy used and mark it up. I couldnt get the guy to give me a price for a new bed. He said the factory doesn't make them anymore so I can't get new. I guess that's my real question. Is that true? Does the new 2015 bed not fit the 2013 ?

you cant demand anything, all depends on your insurance company. if your insurance company only covers aftermarket or used parts, thats all they are going to pay for, unless its not available and new oem is all thats out there or cheaper. this is written in the binder they give you when you sign up for your policy, might want to read that to inform yourself.

forget getting an estimate. my suggestion is to pick a good body shop that you trust and does good work and will work with your insurance company. leave them with the truck and let them work it out. if you take a check from the insurance company based on estimates, you can end up shooting yourself in the foot if there is more damage found AFTER the truck is taken apart.

Apologies. I was trying to bring a little levity to the situation. Hope you get taken care of correctly and get this fixed, it's painful to see a bruised RAM.

Sure you can demand anything...will you get it , maybe, maybe not, but NEVER just take what a bodyshop is giving you as "well, ok then". It's not his insurance, but the one whom hit him.
Plus, he was re-ended, read between the lines, makes it easy for OP to contact an attorney. Makes it easier for the OP to get what he wants.
Dont know if he can read the other drivers insurance policy.........so informed has nothing to do with it. insurance companies are there to give the lowest check...you have to fight back to get whats rightfully yours.

I'm a her. :) Which I think makes it much worse for me dealing with these body shops. I have called the guy who works on my horse trailers and he owns a truck bed shop where they do custom beds and he said he'd take a look at it on Saturday and help me figure out where to take it. I'm in Dayton Ohio if anyone has a body shop recommendation. All these body shop guys are talking to me like I have to take what the insurance company is going to offer. That they wont pay for new parts on my nearly new truck. This is really bumming me out. I told this last guy to write up the estimate with new parts or they're not getting the work and I will get an attorney if I need one to make sure the insurance covering the guy who hit me makes my truck right.

No worries. I'm sorry I overreacted to your response. I am a little overly sensitive about the whole thing at the moment. :favorites13::favorites13::favorites13:

i second the advice of finding a new body shop. some have better relationships with insurance companies. i have a body shop i trust and will only go there. while i have luckily never had anything serious they have always fixed me up. even to the point where my wife was rear ended in her durango and the body shop advised me replacing the trailer hitch even though there was no visible damage. and the insurance covered it based on their advice. i'm not real close to Dayton but i'm in western PA just off the turnpike if you are interested in the name of the shop, which is just across the PA line from ohio

You absolutely have the right to choose whatever body shop you want. Of course it has to be a legal shop, not your cousins brothers best friend that's going to make fake invoices and try to rip them off.

being that you were rear ended, most likely you have no fault in this, and if so, his insurance company will be paying. if new parts are available, you have a right to use new OEM parts. if parts are no longer available, like oem aftermarket or used may be acceptable.

I have no idea about that bed being different between the two years but if so then you may not have an option. but definitely call around to a few different shops, and even dealerships.

Most shops will always mark up as much as they are really allowed to. It's just kind of how the insurance game goes.

What size box is it- 8ft or ?. I found brand new 8ft dually bed with tailgate in Ohio for 2500.00 and it's white. He has 3 of them 2014MY, but it seems that they fit 2010 to 2015MY. Also, found a few in Utah, he will ship but various conditions from just new to some having light damage, but without tailgates. You would have to talk to them.. He was advertising 6.4ft
boxes.

Depends on your states laws if they can force you to use used parts. I'd take it to your dealers body shop. Its coming out of the pocket of the guys insurance that rear ended you. Your insurance has nothing to do with that.

I had a Mazda3 a couple trucks ago that was hit by a *******. Geico will put used and aftermarket parts on it if the car has over 15,000 miles. Anyway, almost every part they put on did not fit the Mazda right. 3 weeks later, it had all brand new oem parts put on. Geico obviously had no idea the customer they were dealing with or they would had just put on new oem parts from the beginning....lol.
