Greetings, I`ll be moving up to a 2021 Cummins HO Dually soon, I plan on purchasing/towing a 5th wheel that weighs about 20k wet.

Are any of you supplementing your rigs with air bags when running this kind of weight?
Pros/cons would be appreciated along with any other advise you may have, I have NOT previously towed a 5th wheel or this kind of size/weight before!

Thanks in advance..cheers, RRJ

PS, after selling our mtn home we`re planning on traveling/living in the trailer for the about a year before re-settling! Any tips?

I am not, but a great YouTube channel called PD Diesel just bought a 2021 and added airbags, did not recommend factory setup due to failures.
Check out his channel, he explains why over there.

I have a 2020 RAM 3500 dually HO Aisin tranny. I do not have air bags. The more electronic controls and gadgets, the more to go wrong.

I have a 2020 RAM 3500 Tradesman CC LB HO Aisin. The reason for the Tradesman was the higher payload. And no sunroof!!

And with your 20k trailer you are looking at 4200+ for pin weight. You'll need all the payload you cane get.

Have a 3500 DRW coming and finished payload is 5400. My 5th wheel pin is in the 4200 loaded range. I plan to add the 7500 airbags just to level out for headlights. It will have plenty of pull and load capacity.

What airbags you going with? My pin weight is around 2300. Probably don’t need them but I don’t want to blind other motorists either. Thank you

We currently have narrowed it down to a handful of toy haulers in the 40-45ft range!
The list: Road Warrior 427, Jayco 4213 or 4212, Cyclone 4270, Momentum 399TH, Vengeance touring edition 40D12, Fuzion 424
Any of these will work, just depends on who gives us the best deal!

We`ll probably haul my Harley bagger (850+lbs) and use the garage as an traveling office/family room when parked!

Thanks in advance for any additional advice you seasoned travelers can pass on!

ps will trailers in the 40-45ft range pose a problem in finding rv parks across the country that will take this size of rig?

I have ordered the air lift 7500 series for the truck. They’re a lower pressure larger bag. Our trailer is a Riverstone 42FSKG Garage under. It’s dry about 17,300 with a max capacity of 21,000 with triple axle.

Newer commercial RV parks with pull through sites will be what you need to plan for.
Most state parks you would be too long.

My 2008 diesel dually had Airlift 5000. The were manual inflate; i.e. you had to fill them with an external compressor to the desired PSI. If I get airbags for this truck, I'll get the inflation pump with them. It's nice to be able to adjust pressure on the fly.

I just went with spring assisted shocks and Timbrens on mine, made all the difference in keeping the load level.

How did your installation go? I have a 2019 RAM 3500 DRW HO 4:10 Rear and have been pulling a Fuzion 427 with no issues. My RAM barely squats with the toyhauler. Now we have a 42FSKG on order as well which has a little bit more pin weight than the Fuzion so I will be interested to hear how your ride is?

A little off topic, how did your Fusion hold up?
Reading the reviews on the trailers on my list, the Fusion being one of them, I`m a little gun shy after reading all of the horror stories concerning the lack of build quality throughout the industry!

I ordered my 3500 DRW HO Cummins with the airbags. Just seemed easer than aftermarket, plus they seem to lower and level really nice. I don’t know if you get aftermarket bags that you’ll be able to lower. I believe the lower feature is a factory thing. I am sure you could get aftermarket bags to lower, but again, how much messing around do you want to do?

Also, with an extended warranty I believe they would be covered for the lift of the warranty.

The air assist springs, either by Timber Grove or Air Lift won't have the ability to make the truck lower. Those style air springs just help level out and stabilize what on the back. They're just supplemental and would work very well for leveling and stabilizing.

Right. I was referring to the fact if you put aftermarket bags in the truck, lowering the bed I don’t believe will work. Lowering the bed only works with the factory bag setup, but I could be wrong.

When I had a 3500 w/duallies I kept it simple and installed spring assisted shocks and Timbrens. Worked great for me carrying a 300 gallon water tank on the flatbed and pulling a 10k utility trailer with a hitch mount. Truck rode nice and level.

I have a friend with Timbrens, he road in my F350 I used to have, I had bags in it. Air VS Timbrens was a night and day ride difference. I am a fan of bags, but it boils down to personal preference at the end of the day.

I have a '19 3500 DRW Limited (HO w/ 4.10s) and do not have bags. I pull a '19 DRV 40KSSB4 that's 18,700lbs dry, has a GVWR of 21,500lbs, and I'm rolling at around 20,000lbs depending on how long the trip is and where we're going. My hitch is a B&W Companion. I have very little squat once hooked and the ride is relatively smooth on most roads. Bags might make a difference, but I'm fairly pleased with this setup at the moment.
