I need help !!
I have an 01 ram 1500 off road sport 4x4 and the pinion is shot I pulled the rear out and have a 96 ram 4x4 same engine 5.9 are the rears interchangeable? I know the driveshafts are different but are the gears the same?

I dont why the u joints are different you gonna need the same ratio or you will screw up the transfer case or front diff the only other thing is brake size

I think the 96' has drum brakes and the 2001 has disc. As stated the front and rear gear ratio needs to be the same.

Negative they're both drums but the 01 has different drums. The pinion on the 96 should be yolk instead of a flange like the 01. They are interchangeable but you have to remove the pinion nut so make sure the pinion depth is right before installing in the truck. The 01 backing plates will swap over just fine along with the drums. I'd swap the axles too as they need to come out to swap the backing plates. As far as the ratios, that's what you'll have to determine. If you go to https://www.moparownerconnect.com/oc/US/en-us/sub/Pages/OwnersLogin.aspx and create an account. You can type in the VIN number and it will tell you what gears the truck has and you can do the same for the 96. Hope this helps, had to do it as a temp fix for mine til I found one out of an 01.
