Same here. What the F is that??? A chain peace that broke off itself. Doesn't seem that any chain internal to the engine can run any vital component of the engine if broken like that. And they are all vital.

Yea, looks like a 4.7 v8 with a broken or worn out chain guide, or maybe a chain that's stretched beyond the limits of the tensioner.

That would detonate the engine with valves colliding with the tops of pistons. And that chain looks broken, so there would be no valve movement and the engine would be dead.

The 4.7 v8 is an overhead cam engine with a cam under each valve cover.

There are 3 timing chains. The chain he is pointing at in his video is the passenger side chain that transfers power from the center sprocket to the passenger side overhead cam.

Im not sure what your talking about, with regards to the broken chain.

Are you seeing something that i missed?

Just replaced both the hydraulic tensioners and put everything back together the clicking is fixed thank you to everyone with the help and suggestions

What did that cost you?

FYI, I had a ‘12 Ram 1500 w/220K miles on a 4.7 and that engine gave Absolutely ZERO troubles. It got regular dino-juice SuperTech 5W20 every 5K miles, used cheapo SuperTech filters, and had spark plug changes at 100K each time….(and they really still looked just-fine each time I changed them)…. Great engine…if slightly underpowered for towing RV’s …but it only did that a couple times/year.
I really really REALLY had planned to keep that truck until the cemetery …. but an older man ran his read light and totalled it out….

Why am I telling you this…? …. in order to support your decision to repair it rather than dispose of it. Those are the very last engines which were designed by American Motors before Chrysler acquired AMC…and they were made in a dedicated engine-assy-line. Great littl engines…both the 4.7 V8 and it’s 3.7 V6 little bro.

It was 150 for the whole timing chain kit and gaskets that’s it and yeah I love this truck i wanna keep it as long as I can

Maybe your monitor requires a tweaking of the brightness, contrast and sharpness settings.

The source material is marginal for increasing the size, but it sure looks like another link to me.

I think I understand the confusion.

You don't see the next link on the chain because it is obscured beside the engine block casting, where it passes through an opening, to continue up through a corresponding opening in the cylinder head, then the top of the cylinder head and the camshaft sprocket.

On my lap top it looks OK to my old eyes, mind you I damn near got sea sick from the hurry up jerky clip that H posted. slow steady would be better.
Glad it turned out simple fix.

I never had one of these, but a fellow had on in a Dakota truck and it was a snappy unit. He really liked it.

That was a very good read. Thank you!

My '03 Dakota had the 4.7 motor and I found it had exception torque. It was also about the quietest motor I ever owned. Completely trouble free all the way to 148,000.

LOL. When the Rambler name was changed, it was believed the name of American Motors was chosen because the Ramblers had parts from every other OEM in it (with the exception of some of the engine basics) The 390 / 401 had a Ford dist, a GM alternators etc, etc. The Rambler AMX and the Scambler were crazy performance cars with 20/20 foresight for new ideas and innovations. I won a few $$$ runs with my brothers '68 AMX 390 4 speed.

My brother restores Rambler / AMC performance cars in AZ and I have worked on lots of his stuff for him before he moved out there.
