My wife and I just finished loading our trailer to go hunting when I jumped in the truck to back it out of the garage and hook it up to the trailer. The temperature overnight only got down to 42, so it was probably down to about 50 overnight in the garage. I pushed the brake pedal and pushed the starter and all the lights came on but the truck did not even fully turn over the engine. I don't believe that the batteries are flat. I last ran the truck on Thursday, out to the rifle range, to the carwash, and fully fueled it up. Everything appeared to be operating normally.

I've only got 32,000 miles on this truck and every service has been done. The DEF tank is more than 3/4 full.

Anybody got any clues? There are no diesel shops open locally on Sunday and the elk are calling me.....Appreciate any insights anyone can offer.

The easy first answer is you have a weak battery on the amps side. You could have full volts which is why lights come on and partially why it sort of turned over. You need to load test it on a unit like a carbon pile load test machine, you have to put a lot of load to test the amps. Batteries are a fickle lot, sometimes they just go. If the load test comes back as good, then you have a draw somewhere and that is another post.

Good luck

Sounds like battery. Especially if U have dual battery suspect 1 weak.

FYI: If U replace do both batteries not just 1.

I talked to our local diesel shop this morning, who has a very good reputation. They also felt it was the batteries. I called AAA and they sent over a tow truck with a diesel battery booster. The driver checked both batteries before we tried to start it and they read 12.3 volts. I pushed the start button and it immediately started up. I drove it to the diesel shop and they hope to get to it today or tomorrow. We'll see how this plays out.

I just got a call from the local diesel shop. One of the batteries was toast. They are replacing both batteries, per suggestions from you folks here, at my direction. I am having them install AGM batteries as I have much more faith in their life.

I just had the same thing happen to me. Both batteries read 13.2 volts when unhooked, although they were the originals from 2017.
Got in the truck and it just went click. I did not have any symptoms of batts going bad. Then key fob was stuck as well.
$388 later I have 2 new AGM batteries and hopefully another 7 years of battery life.
Also whatever you and your wife are hunting for good luck to you. :biggun:

I am a big believer in AGMs. That's what we run in our travel trailer (a sheep camp if you know what that is). We have four each six volts and two solar panels. We run the heat on low at night when it's cold and have heaters on our waste tanks and drain pipe. We've never run out of power.

I replaced the original battery in our Mahindra Roxor (small diesel jeep) with an AGM.

We're hunting for a spike elk. It's been a tough season here in Southern Utah. My hunting buddy, who is a far more experienced hunter and 15 years younger than I, has yet to bag one either. We have had to contend with large numbers of sheep that are run on the public lands in some of the best places to hunt, an explosion of small quaking aspens that make it horrific to get through many areas, and numerous deadfalls as a result of a fire several years ago. The best I have done so far this year is I had a bull screaming within 100 yards, but he never came in. No idea whether he was a branched bull or a spike.

What brand batteries did you get? Also in Utah (Ogden/Roy area) and my stock batteries in 2022 Ram check bad and need to replace.
