So now I'm banished to driving the 96 Dodge Ram 1500 as a daily driver because fuel prices are cheaper for it.

Gas prices are pretty close to what they are down here but diesel is almost 40 cents cheaper

Diesel should never be higher than gasoline. The whole system is just ********. I don't even own a diesel and it makes me mad. Our food and nearly everything we buy is higher because of this. Up here to get more oil they are fracking and using millions of gallons of water and diesel. Trucks fill up in early morning in Fargo and then drive it to western North Dakota because there is a shortage out there. There is a huge lineup to get diesel everyday.

I love diesel and want one but the prices are just silly.

Gotta love tree huggers and the government. If people would take the time to educate themselves a little they would see how much more efficient a diesel engine is, not to mention the energy save through the refining process.
People see black soot and automatically think its killing the environment and tax the hell out of it.
Between that an becaus it's an easy way to tax interstate traveling/shipping

It was just a matter of time I figured. The manufactures have sold millions of diesel pickups & now the gas companies get to cash in. I hate to say it but I'm not one bit surprised. That is why I never bought into the diesel craze. As a retired mechanic the cost to own a diesel doesn't pay unless you tow heavy all the time or run 50,000 miles/year min. First off the option cost is about $7000 that is 2000 gallons of gas @ $3.50/gal. Then filters that are twice to three times gas engines & 2.5 gallons of oil every 5000 miles.
The craziest thing I see are 90% of these diesels only haul kids, & products from WalMart. Pull a TT to the Lake 20 miles away from home. So if I was the gas companies watching this I would do what they are doing.
I tow a 9000# TT. Every time I sat down with paper & pencil there was NO WAY a diesel was cheaper than gas. Unless I was going to use it as I stated earlier.
Just my two cents. Sorry don't feel your pain, just buck up & pay now is all you can do. I see a lot of used diesels for sale on the lots that aren't moving these days.

Diesel been over $4.00 a gallon since last November But its gasoline that went down sharply right around November and continues to fall. I found another fuel station at $3.389 fo gas and $4.429 for diesel.

As for comparing the 2 rigs... Fuel log histories...

2002 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel (7,300#)
Lowest 14.1 MPG - Highest 25.3 MPG


1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L V8 (5,500#)
Lowest 6.30 MPG - Highest 16.16 MPG


Even my worse MPG in the 2002 is still above the average for the 1996 Dodge. As for records for the 96 Dodge there is very little data because it was a stand in truck for many years. Now the 96 Dodge just became the daily driver.

Then if I want to be cruel I could go off and figure it out in Mile Per Gallon Per Ton and the Cummins will still have a higher score that the 96 Dodge hands down...
