Simple as the title says, I can remote start the truck from a thousand yards but have to hit the unlock button a dozen times at twenty yards. Switched fobs and same thing. Came home from work and tried to lock the truck through the garage wall and no dice, had to use other fob to lock the truck.

Is this as simple as both batteries in both fobs dying at the same time or is there some issue with these trucks?

Could be.

Try taking the FOB apart and cleaning the contacts with a light abrasive like a pencil erasure. Clean out thoroughly and give it a try. They tend to get a little dirt and corrosion on them over time.

I do this at least once a year, more if they get cranky and they work fine.

Mine are over 6 years old with the original battery but they are starting to get weak, less range, so batteries will probably be coming soon.

Do you have to do anything funky with the fobs after changing batteries or is it a simple swap?

Could be a problem with the RF receiver in the truck. Can't help with any troubleshooting on that unit so you may have to take it in to have it looked at.

Nothing special when replacing batteries. I did mine, 2011 1500 Outdoorsman, and it woked fine. Did you put the battery in upside down?

it also depends on where you are when you are using them. keyless entry systems are designed to accept interference in order to comply with fcc regulations. since the batteries are pretty cheap i like to change mine every 6 months or so.

i have had so much interference in a garage before i couldnt even unlock it from across the garage.

I didn't even take the battery out, just took apart the fob and cleaned it.

Fobs suck that's about it.

Pretty much nailed it right there.
mine worked for about 6 months, then decided to retire.
I've tried every little battery change, eraser cleaning, prong bending trick in the book. Even went to the dealership where they said they'd charge me $375 for a "re-programming" due to my warranty being expired. I told the dealership I'd pay the bill if it worked......I never paid the bill
