My mom passed away in late July and I inherited the family car. They bought this new in 1984 here in Houston and has been garage kept since new. My mom only drove this car to go shopping so it only has 25K miles, kinda crazy for a 36 yr old car. Needless to say I had to drain/flush all fluids, tuneup, fuel filter, oil change, belts/hoses and tires. It runs great and AC blows cold. This was the last generation of RWD Celicas.

Wheels seemed odd to me with the Carroll Shelby wheels but after some research it turns out they were indeed made by him for Gulf States Toyota. Supra wheels were extremely popular yet they weren't quite the right size for the Celica so Gulf States Toyota got together with Shelby (Shelby and Friedkin were old racing buddies and had a number of business dealings) and arranged for some lookalikes to be made to fit the Celica. They'd be installed at the port of entry right there in Houston.

Carroll Shelby, famous racecar driver was approached by Toyota in 1968 about becoming an automobile distributor. According to Shelby,

"I turned it down because I went to Lee Iacocca, and he told me not to take it because the domestic makers were going to push the Japanese back into the ocean."

Shelby told his racing buddy, Tom Friedkin, about Toyota's intentions to sell distributor licenses. Friedkin flew to Japan and convinced Toyota that he had the necessary knowledge and resources.

Sorry for the loss of mom. That car looks super clean, thanks for sharing. I love the simplicity, that's a pretty cool time capsule.

Everything about that car screams 80's...

You took the words out of my mouth! My condolences regarding mom... It definitely isn’t a replacement for her, but it is still cool to have, drive and reminisce with!

What are your plans???

Thanks, I’m just gonna keep it and drive it. I got the title switched over and new plates few days ago.

Sad circumstance, but nice car! The owner of the dealership where I work collects old, low mile Toyotas. He would be HAPPY to take that off your hands. :)

So sorry for your loss.

I LOVE old Celicas. I had a few in the past. I still think it'd be fun to take a worn out one and resto-mod it with a turbo. But your car - such low mileage and so clean, keep it just like it is.
