Okay guys, so I have been considering two options...

selling my K&N intake and getting a closed box intake..with some sort of ram air set up

or making my own box for the K&N

So..the things im wondering about..

I would probley use some kind of plexiglass/wood concoction..(more comfortable with carpentry then fiberglass work..)

do you think wood would hold up in a engine bay?

and then the K&N has the filter in the front passenger side of the bay, pretty far away from the stock air duct hole..should I try to tie into that stock hole or just rely on the ram air..?

heres a pic for reference..thanks for your commets and suggestions.

If you sell it and buy a different brand, I suggest S&B. It's got an enclosed filter and runs from the factory inlet instead of sucking in air from the engine bay

that's what I was planning on going with if it came down to selling and buying a new one, was trying to avoid
the hassle of selling though. I would rather build a box but I have those concerns I mentioned.

I had a K&N for a while, before switching to a 14x3. :)

It really worked best with all the sheetmetal gone, a much larger spectre element, and a simple clamp on filter heat shield I got off ebay for around 10 bucks.

That freed up a lot of engine compartment space until the tube cracked again. Actually ran better than with the stock element and was bit louder too!

I say make your own. And yes as said above "no wood" you dont want that thing to catch on fire.
I used plexi and electric saw though a circular saw would work also. Though it does suck to cut because the heat that builds up melts it some.

I would just measure the size specs for the box then have lowes cut you the pieces you need then just glue together with some epoxi. Scuff the whole thing up except the top then shoot it with some ceramic high temp spray paint.

Usually if I can just fabricate stuff myself that usually the rout I go.

yes, and why not a double wall with just air inside?
difficult to do, maybe. but air is a good heat insulator.
and paint it in silver glossy or white. clear colors reflects infra reds.
and... last but not least... to get real fresh air somewhere :)

I might just do that...A whole plexiglass box..hasn't thought to use all plexiglass lol

as far as the stock air hole, should I try to tap into that? or rely on just the ram air?

in the picture I posted you can kinda see it, it's on the passenger side above the fender well..on the pics of the s&b intake you can get an idea of where it plugs in

I probably wouldn't worry about getting forced air in there unless your thinking of racing the truck.

well if I don't plug the box into the spot where the stock air horn went, and I don't plug a tube into the box, how will air get to the filter?
