Intermittent check engine light?

1995 5.9 auto 2x4 168k every once in awhile my CEL comes on if i have been on the highway for awhile, no change in performance, shut off and restart, then no light. Any ideas? Driving me bananas

Likely a misfire, your cat is going out, or your pre-cat O2 sensor is trying to retire.


Changed your plugs/cap/rotor/wires lately?

New cap rotor plugs wires coil and cat 7k ago replaced o2 4k ago, not feeling a miss....

Tried resetting your PCM or checking for stored codes? Obviously there is an issue that it sees.

Try a freebie scan from the auto chains. AZ uses crap, O'Riellys uses Innova. Slightly better. See what you can find first, then we'll go from there. I use an Innova 3160 that I got on Amazon for under $200. Best thing I've found short of a $3000 Snap-On, or a trip to the dealer. Paid for itself many times over. They love to say "O2 sensor", and then sell you one. Bad O2 reading is usually due to something else. But they do get slower with age, and not react as fast to changing conditions. This can also be seen on a good scanner.

Its obd1 they can't scan it, restting pcm helped, took it to a shop, they found nothing stored
