I think the float in my carb is sticking. Intermittently, at different positions (sometime high idle, sometimes low idle). The reason I think this is because from one minute to the next, it can idle fine but then suddenly it won't hold its own idle and I'm forced to push the throttle pedal to keep it from completely stalling, then another minute passes and it will idle way too high, and everything in between. When it stalls from low idle, it won't start back up unless I pump the gas three times then turn the key. This reassures my suspicions because if the float sticks at closed position, then Stalls out the engine from lack of fuel, then when it attempts to restart, there's no gas left in the chamber since the float was stuck at closed position. Other times, I will smell gasoline after shutting the engine off and getting out of the truck. This makes me think that the float is stuck at the open position, flooding the engine and maybe making gas seep out thru the gasket on the carb. Am I on the right track to assume my float is sticking at different positions? I've tried carb cleaner, if it helped it only helped for a couple days.

the only way to find out would be to pull the carb apart. there is nothing you could spray carb cleaner on while the carb is still on the engine that it would help. usually when a float is sticking it sticks in the open position which will cause stalling from flooding but you will usually also get gas coming out the vent.
