After having a shop originally quote $320, then coming back and saying $480, I am going to install my 2" level (hopefully Friday) myself (I paid $85 for the tools that I need...), and I am wondering if it is necessary to remove the brakes, or just a precaution?

Makes it a lot easier. What kit did you order?

Removing the brakes is not necessary when installing a level kit but it can make things a little bit easier. Which kit do you have?

It takes one minute to remove the caliper... just have something handy to hang it from like these things or an upside down paint bucket to sit it on. Makes life a lot easier than trying to deal with all the moving parts lining up AND fighting the brake hose at the same time.

I went with the Motofab 2" level, and I went ahead and did it this evening. It took me about four hours... An hour and a half to two hours of that was trying to get the struts back on after the level was on it. To be honest, while doing it, the $480 was not looking too bad. However, now that it is done, I am glad that I did it myself. The brake calipers were, by far, the easiest part about it. All that is left is the alignment tomorrow. And, of course, AT tires when these stock tires wear out...

$85 for the tools that I needed plus $100 for the alignment. Not bad.

I have done my front too many times already, tried removing brakes and it just wastes my time.

My last time took 30 minutes to remove the strut, compress spring, remove strut, and all back in 30 minutes.

I just zip tie the spindle to the frame.
