LOL - now you got me thinking, I don't remember what size I bought. Have to run out to the truck and look tomorrow.

LOL, me too, but I'm sure it's an 8 or 12-ton.
Both sizes at CTC have a 17.32" maximum lift height and I tested it.

If I have to change the rear passenger side with a soft shoulder, I may not be able to lift at the pumpkin which AFAIK, would result in the smaller jack being next to useless for my Warlock.

Maybe, I missed the secret lift point at the back.

Have you not tested lifting your truck at both ends with the standby jack?

Thanks for the reply RamDiver. Here is a picture of the stock jack . It is a non hydraulic gear driven hand crank jack . It was inop when I got it. Yes , a high lift bottle jack might very well mount in the same exact spot
Thanks...
That's very similar to the screw jack that came with the 1985 Chevy C10 Silverado I used to own. I swapped it out with a 2 ton bottle jack. It struggled when lifting one of the front wheels but it worked for me for the 10 or so years I owned the truck.

I will definitely measure before buying . I already have some blocks of wood in the truck for just that purpose. I would think that a 4 ton jack would do the job IF it's not heavily loaded with something.

No, I haven't, I've actually only needed to use it a few times, when I rotated the tires on the 3500, (I've since gotten a floor jack), once on the camper when one of the china bombs exploded, and once on my 1500 when I got this. I'm sure if I didn't have it, I'd have needed it about 15 times.

That was a good one, washer and all but it was 10 years ago.

I'm sure I've had at least 4 nails or screws in the past 10 years. My new truck insurance includes roadside assistance and a road hazard warranty on the tires.

I hope to never test the feature but nice to know it's there.

I would have never found this deal if the last insurance company hadn't tried to screw me over by saying, I had to pay for air tags and my insurance only goes up a few hundred $ or without tags, it goes up $800 immediately.

Good morning Bob

I would trust one of the old-style jacks that clipped into the bumper if that's what you have but I forget what was typical back in '84. How about posting a pic?

The POS toys that manufacturers have been supplying in the past couple of decades are pathetic and a great example of the absolute minimum requirement that is provided.

Many of us carry high-lift bottle jacks because they're compact and don't require much real estate in a rubbermade box, on the ground or at the lift point on the truck.

Your project looks like it's coming along great, thanks for sharing your adventure.

.
The '70s D-series came with scissors jacks.

Dusty

That is a sweet truck and it’s going to be gorgeous when you’ve finished restoring it. If you plan on showing the truck at rallies, or even think you might, definitely KEEP that old jack and refurbish it. The new bottle jack can live in its carry case or Rubbermaid container as mentioned by others.

That is what I thought, they will work, but you need level ground and a about 12 inch of 2x10 under the base.
Dad had a truck or 2 like yours and he bought a small floor jack he carried in the back all the time, he painted the cap to match the color of the truck, Or I may have done it.

His was 2wd auto with a 360 and that truck got better mileage than anything else I have seen.
I think it had 2.7? gears in it

If you are missing power on gages and such, pull all the fuses and relay's and reinstall, corrosion could build up, look for wires chewed by mice. speedo cable could need oil, or cleaning.

Hello again and thanks for the replies and compliments. The 318 is fine with me . Even though it's only about 120 hp,if it gets me to camp and a few places around town that works.
Coastal WA Gal - I will take your advice and hold onto the original jack even though I hadn't thought of going to a rally. My thought is to get it mechanically sound and then deal with the peeling clear coat and other items .
Many years ago I had orders to be stationed at Whidbey Island but traded with a fellow sailor who was desperate to be stationed near his family in Washington.
Marshall - I have had the instrument cluster out twice so far and will need to replace it I think . You are correct , lots of corrosion . I resoldered loose connecting pins and cleaned numerous bulb sockets before replacing the bulbs( I would like to find dimmable white or slightly blue LED bulbs ). I also repaired the voltage limiter . The speedometer/odometer is frozen and will only rotate a few turns before binding.
Again ,thanks for the replies and suggestions
Bob

Re the speedometer cable
I have pumped in diesel fuel or WD40 , pull the bottom end out as well and let sit sometime it’ll free up
And if you can get the core out and clean, then put lots of luberplate on it
A new one if available may be easier
I don’t know about power to the dash, a book would be handy

I buy quite a few used books at a large use bookstore in the city, and they have a whole section on car stuff, lot of sevice manuals.
most of the time they never told me what I wanted to hear .

Thanks for the reply Marshall. The problem with the speedometer/odometer locking up is in the speedometer itself . I plan on replacing the cable just because it seems like a good thing to do but I don't know if the actual gauge can be taken apart and repaired . They aren't available new ( are they ? ) so I would need to find a used one and hope that it works.
I have gotten everything else in the dash and cluster to work,
Bob

PS- one thing that I really need to get is an OEM factory shop manual. In the meantime I will check to see what the library has .

I know on some I have worked on, you can pull the inside cable out, just from one direction, but not sure on the '80's stuff. 1960 you could take them apart, I think you have to pull out the bottom end , it has been quite a while .
If you could find new, it would likely be some one like Dorman, Amazon may be a place to look
Napa?
I am not sure about the US side of the line.
but would not hurt to check the dealer
BTW , if its seized, it may have twisted off the bottom end on the gear, so maybe pull that apart on the transmission tail shaft first and check the gear out as well.

Crazy looking Topper Bob. What was the purpose of it being higher towards the front? Must have been a specific use. Modern toppers are higher towards the tailgate.

Thanks again for the info Marshall, I will look to post again when I have resolved the speedometer issue but it may be a while.
Hello Skates15 , it is an unusual topper and I really didn't think much of it ( or the long running boards ) when I got the truck but it's kind of growing on me even though it looks odd. I like the functionality of the long running boards now that I have owned it for a while. It's a lot easier to get in and out of the truck for both driver and passenger and to clean clean snow off the roof ,etc.
The rear half of the topper slides forward if you wish to haul something that is tall like a washing machine or some shrubs etc. It has pins that lock it in place for normal use and can be pulled to allow the rear portion of the topper to move forward on slides . I haven't seen one like it don't know where it was made . There is a tag on it that says " Trans Sport " . If anyone has any info on the topper I would be interested to hear about it .
By the way , I grew up in northeastern Ohio .
Bob
