So, I’ve been sitting on my stock wheels and tires for almost a year now. I finally decided to sell the tires but they’re still mounted on the stock wheels. I went to a local used tire shop today to have them unmounted and they gouged a nice ring around the outside edge of my wheel. The owner was nice enough and agreed to reimburse me for a new factory wheel, which is good, but I was shocked however to find out that a single stock wheel from a power wagon is $512! I hate to take $500 from the small shop but I’m not paying out-of-pocket for their mistake. I’ll be ordering a new wheel on Monday and taking the invoice to the tire shop for reimbursement. A real shame this had to happen.

Is that for a MOPAR OEM wheel? Or a replica?

$512 is for an OEM replacement from the dealer.

For $250. Cash, I'd drive around all day long with that wheel.

I get what you’re saying but it would drive me nuts. I run the AEV Salta daily but am considering mounting an AT on these for winter.

Nice that you’re being so thoughtful. You may be able to find takeoffs from a private seller. On FB, near me, someone selling this wheel (4) for $400.

See if you can buy them privately.

Thoughtful? Please elaborate.

There are two issues with getting one private party.

1. I need an actual invoice to get reimbursed.

2. It’s unlikely someone is going to sell 1 wheel.

You're going out of your way to ask around to see how you can reduce the cost of a business that didn't do their job properly when they make it right.

That is a pretty damn good definition of thoughtful.

I believe FriedDumpling was showing you a way to replace all 4 wheels for less than the cost of one factory wheel.

That would, in effect, leave you in a position to sell "just 1 wheel" three times.

Also, any person can hand write a legally accepted "invoice" if the correct info and a signature are included.

Yes, thoughtful that you were concerned about the impact on a local business owner.

And if you could pick up 4 for $400, keep or sell the extra set of four, pocket a few bucks on the flipside and have a set that is unscratched.

My son had a 2017 Subaru WRX and got a flat at 9000 miles. He got a set of takeoffs pretty cheap then I dropped it off at a local shop. He went and picked it up and it had chips the whole way around the edge. He wasn't too happy about it. He never went and complained but said he would never go back there again.

I have looked locally on CL for stock wheels but haven’t found any for sale. Unfortunately it looks like I’ll have to order a single wheel from the dealer on Monday.

My plan was/is to mount up some A/Ts on the stock wheels to run as a winter set.

Bummer this happened but it is what it is.

Yeah well I seriously doubt you would even be able to the that microscopic gouge once a tire is mounted on the wheel.
You sound like the kind of person who would demand a free meal from a restaurant because the wine was not at the proper temperature.

:untitled:

Dude I respectfully disagree, that is not microscopic and the shop should replace that wheel. The insults are not needed either it’s a bit sophomoric don’t ya think!

Could you blame him? Drinking red wine at anything other than 65* fahrenheit is simply BARBARIC!!! No human with any civility should EVER be forced to drink wine at something other than ideal temperature! :D

You might have a wheel repair shop capable of making that wheel look like new for considerably less - in my area we have a shop that would repair that wheel to like new condition for $150......if that isn’t available in your area, the shop should stand up and buy you a new wheel - they may even ask to get the gouged wheel from you, to sell or possibly repair and then sell, to recover some of the costs.

You are going the extra mile trying to find a less expensive solution, and that’s great, but sometimes there aren’t reasonable options.

Either way the shop is doing the right thing, and hopefully, they learn how to avoid fouling up wheels.....

There are dedicated "wheel shops" in Houston (prolly any major city too) that could remove that for $100. The rear wheel on the wife's V-Sport got gouged in a fender bender, the body shop said they use these guys a lot, but we went new 'cause insurance covered it...

I understand how upsetting this is when your property is damaged by a shop. BUT are you entitled to a new wheel? Maybe not. You are entitled to the value of your wheel at time of damage.

Make sure you get the new purchase approved in writing before you buy it.

I would treat the situation like insurance, just get indemnified. Replace the wheel with one of like kind and quality (and if it has to be new to be reimbursed by their instruction, so be it, they will have to pay more) and let them keep the scratched wheel. They can then salvage it and try to recoup part of what they paid out for the new one. You are made whole and are not taking away more than you had when you went into the shop i.e. not leaving with an extra wheel. Good luck

I totally understand. The shop owner and I discussed other options but he told me to just buy a new wheel, bring him the invoice, and he would reimburse me. Is it possible for him to stiff me? Of course, but I don’t think that’s likely. I plan to offer him the damaged wheel for him to resell if he chooses. By no means am I trying to profit from the situation. I didn’t post here looking for advice, although I do appreciate the genuine input.
