Last night I decided to take my FOB apart to see what size battery it takes. It came apart easy enough, no problems there, but when I put it back together, I noticed the key would keep sliding out of the FOB. I took the other FOB apart and noticed there is a spring that keeps the key latch closed! Doh! It evidently fell out when I had it apart. I tried looking all over for it but to no avail.

So, my question is, has anyone ever have this happen and if so, could you find a replacement spring?

Is the spring in a BIC lighter too big?

Amazingly, that BIC lighter spring is a good field expedient replacement for an M16 extractor spring (don't ask :waytogo:)

Yea, Bic spring is too big, however, I found that a small rubber band cut to the same length works very well. I'm not sure of the longevity of a rubber band, but, it's cheap and I have lot's of them!

I know this is an older post but I thought I would share... I had the same thing happen on my 2022 charger hellcat... dash said keyfob battery low, i bought one was sitting in the parking lot with my door open used the key to pry open the fob gently and the little spring popped right out the door fortunately the little metal switch did not... I measured the spring from my 2nd fob it measures as follows (Outer Diameter X Wire Diameter X Length) 1.95mm x 0.39mm x 9.65mm i found some spring kits on Amazon that have one approximatel.y that size i am ordering (pretty sure it will work) TOP Vigor 20pcs compression spring 2mm OD 0.3mm wire 40mm length ( i will just cut it to length)

Also the rubber band trick worked as a quick field hack i cut a length of rubber band about 2x as long as the slot for the switch when i put it in it sort of popped up in the middle to make an arch... once i closed the 2 halves of the fob on it... it smashed the band into the slot and seems to work as a cheap hack.

Bic springs work on Hi Standard pistol rear sites as well, also the slide release .

There is a black hole in hell that sucks up all little springs and screws that escape when you are not looking.

BTW, in my 80+ yrs I have never tossed out small springs or screws, in 20-30 yrs I may need one again. ;)

All of which illustrates why I disassemble such things inside a gallon or larger ziplock bag… :)

I have not as a rule done that, but after a few years, you know what may/can fly.
The old shop, if it hit the floor, goodbye, but new shop, with a good floor , usally could track stuff down. I use a old bit of low pile carpet on the shop bench , keeps stuff from rolling away, and helps protect stuff from scratches.

This brings back memory of taking apart the electric transmission controller the pushbutton shifter activated on the transmission.
It was on my 1958 Edsel Citation . It was full of little levers and springs that all took off when the top was opened on the case.
After a couple of days of cussing and sweating, got it figured out and working.
