Ok so this is rather long post but I want to make sure that I can get everyone the full details so I can get some good feedback.
My 03 Ram has 182000 miles on it. My radiator blew up on me coming down a mountain road and I couldn't pull over but I made it home. Replaced the radiator and started her up, oil leaked everywhere. I blew a hole in my valve cover. Replaced that and refilled with oil. Now I am blowing white smoke. Great. So I took it to a mechanic. I never take my vehicles to mechanics I usually do it myself but this was outside my comfort zone. So I towed it to a mechanic. He quoted me $1800.00 to repair. I said ok just get it done. 2 months later he said it was done and gave me a $3900.00 bill. He replaced both heads, valve job, etc. all top engine stuff is new. I started my truck and there was a knock/tick and a CEL for an O2 sensor. He said the knock would go away after oil started circulating. Well it never went away and it was misfiring so I brought it back. He said he had to change the lifters out on the other side, another $300.00. I got it back and still misfiring and all my gauges shut off. So I brought it back. He said it was a wiring harness that the dealer wanted $1700.00 for I said no and went and got my truck. I checked the coil on cylinder 1 and replaced it. The misfire was gone. And the wiring harness just wasn't seated properly. So now that fixed but know the knock is still there. Its a knock that is almost always there at idle and wile accelerating. Sometimes it goes away but if I shut off the truck and start again its there again. Once I got the truck back I started looking. I started with 10w-30 cheap oil he put in. I heard thinner oil would help so now I am running Mobil 1 full syn 0w-20 with a K&N Filter. Knocking is still there. I have changed all my lifters, checked rocker arms, no vacuum leaks. I know that I need a new cat on the drivers side, but I dont know if this can cause it. I cant take it back to the mechanic. He used wrong spark plugs, filter, broke pvc valve and taped it back, used a water heater nipple for the crank vent connector, broke 2 mounting bolts on valve cover and ripped the valve gasket cover. I just dont know what else it can be. If I put a rod on the front of the oil pan at the front edge of the engine ( I think its still the oil pan) I can hear it through a screw driver. What can it be??? I need to take this on a 600 mile round trip next week. The knocking speeds up with acceleration but once I cruise it pretty much goes away.

I'm sorry but you got screwed. I would have bought you a rebuilt powertrain long block for 2700 and installed it for less than a grand.

From the extent of your overheating no telling what might be cracked. I really wish you would have posted here before you did anything several of us would have given you straight talk.

I agree you probably got screwed by the mechanic. You overheated the engine by driving it home. I'm guessing the knocking you're hearing is a rod knock. It only seems to go away at cruising speed because it is knocking so fast it's hard to hear.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I already know I got screwed thats why I only paid him the $900 and even that I am taking him to court over. Today it died again horribly loud knocking like I through a rod or valve drop absolutely horrible. So it got towed to AAMCO for a used engine swap for about $3500.00. I know probably getting reamed on the price but they will have it done in 2 days with a measly 90 day warranty and I can make payments. I would just scrap the truck but I am still making payments on it so I cant do that and its my work truck so time is of the essence. I dont want to hear that I was dumb and made stupid choices I know I got reamed plus the dude up marked materials 300% $31.00 each lifter and @ 16 lifters gets a little pricey. Any comments are welcome but remember I cant change things behind me.

Then look forward. If a place is willing to warranty an engine for 90 days chances are they expect it to run a lot longer than that and they actually have a good one. The 03 was much easier to find a motor for than the 02 you are lucky there.

Let us know how the new motor runs, if they don't need the core take the heads off and sell them and keep those valve lash adjusters in case you ever need them on the newest transplant.

2 days is excellent it would take me more than 2 days to complete it and get it running. But I'm old.
