I recently upgraded from a 2009 TRX4 to a 2016 Laramie, installed a 2.5" lift/level kit and 35" Goodyear Duratracs. Made my first trip to the ranch this weekend and nearly got stuck in a hole I've driven through hundreds of times because the new truck didn't have positraction/limited slip in the rear like my old truck did.

What options do I have to upgrade the rear diff for $500 or less?

You have several options if you’re doing it yourself, but if you want someone else to install it for you then you’ll most likely go over $500.

What gears does it have? If it’s 3.21’s it might be worth putting lower gears in to go with those 35’s you put on your truck.

Is your truck 2wd or 4wd?

4x4. Yes it has 3.21s which I'm not impressed with, especially since my last truck had 3.92s. Since it's 4x4, I would have to regear both axles then we're talking $3K+. No thanks.

Just looking for traction aids.

Did you turn off traction control? Man if I don't hit that button I swear I’ll get stuck just about every time. You did verify on your build sheet it don’t have “anti spin differential”? I’m not doubting ya. Just checking boxes haha

I concur about turning off traction control (especially when in 4WD). Everything seems to work better without tc involved.

This is my first truck with all the nannies and it makes me wonder if anything is given "priority" in regards to programming. Because traction control automatically braking the rear wheels will interfere with how 4-auto works. Not quite sure how or if it interferes with the clutch-based LSD but I imagine it is preventing that from working at 100% as well.

The only bad part is that you cant fully disable it in 2WD.

Pretty sure I did but I can tell in how this truck drives compared to my previous truck, that I know had a strong limited slip if not factory locker in the other one and nothing in this one.

$500? Not much of anything you can do with that budget. Your best bet is going to be to just put it in 4x4 and live with it.

so just get stuck and have 1 front tire spinning and 1 rear tire spinning? Cool. Thanks for the input.

If you can't handle the truth then don't ask the question. There is Nothing you can do for your $500 budget.

I see a 3.21 limited slip on ebay brand new for 375. Its the actual diff, not the housing, etc.

Not sure if its just plug and play in place of a non-LSD, but there is still a bit of room in the budget for extras (labor, etc)

Ha! I know right! My old truck never had any problems and it's been wet for 2 yrs. Not my land so I don't want to make too many ruts. I came back the long way where I had to open 2 gates. I little tedious but kept me from getting stuck on a 3700 AC ranch by myself!

With the 8 speed and 3.21's, your final drive ratio is still lower than with the 6 speed and 3.92's and should get to a certain speed faster than your old truck. I was miffed at myself at first for not ordering the 3.92's but now that I have the Edge tuner and a pedal commander I can barely keep the tires from spinning when I take off from a stop. I can only imagine giving it full throttle with the 3.92's. Mine is 2wd and stock tire size though.

If you're really mechanically inclined there are cheaper lockers, but you get what you pay for and if you install it wrong you'll be paying for it twice and then some.

Having the 3.21 and then driving a 3.92, it made me wonder if they keep the throttle response the way it is so that those with 3.92 arent constantly spinning their tires.

My 3.21 with the Pedal Commander *felt* very similar to the stock 3.92 when launching....obviously it cant really be the same because of the gearing, but the PC woke up the 3.21 a lot.

something like this is what I was thinking of...https://www.4wheelparts.com/p/power...ype_PQ=Automatic+Locker&Axle+Location_PQ=Rear

Or a mini spool but I don't think that would be fun to drive around on city streets.

How much is the Pedal Commander and does it affect gas mileage? I had K&N Cold Air intake, exhaust and Flashpaq programmer on the old truck. I kept the K&N and haven't installed it yet, hopefully this weekend.

The 3.21s with the 8 speed feel like I'm driving my wife's Tahoe which doesn't want to get out of its own way. I always said that my old truck just wanted to RUN, this one...not so much.

Throw the K&N in the trash and buy a pedal commander. Those filters let way too much dirt get past them.

lincoln locker? weld up the spider gears? If it was a trail only truck, that would be an option. Most of my driving is city but when I go off road, I don't have time to get stuck!
