Has anyone tried using a longer oil filter to increase the amount of oil they can put in their motor? I use Baldwin filters and the B34 is the replacement filter for my '96. Baldwin lists the B2 as the related filter that is the same, only longer. If the legnth will fit, I'm gonna try it out and was wondering if anyone else has done this?

Had used Baldwin filters for many years. Now Royal Purple. On all of my vehicles I use a longer filter "if available" It just gives us a little more surface area for filtering.

There's certainly nothing wrong with running a longer filter. With today's oil and filter tech there also isn't a reason to except maybe in the most extreme environments. Mopar switched from the long filter in the 70's as engine compartments got a bit more cramped and emissions plumbing got in the way. I remember using the long filter on old Mopar big blocks.

I remember something about the relief valve being different on the old filter. Can't remember the exact details.

If you'll sleep better at night running a few more ounces of oil and filtering area go for it.

Thanks guys. I just have to check and see how much room I have. It's a little crowded down there.

I realize this is an old thread now, but it might help to know that I've been doing exactly this for years in my '99 Sebring convertible. I use the B2 filter instead of the B34. I'm in Canada; I run the car for 3 seasons out of the year with Boss 5W30 oil and the engine is more than happy. It's probably true that it isn't necessary, but in a 20-year-old vehicle every little bit helps. Just fwiw.

Is there really any benefit to having maybe a few extra ounces of oil? Probably none at all.
