On older non electric steering boxes ..

When there was a double nutted stud

The outer nut is a locking nut
when the locking nut is backed off
it allows you to FINE adjust the steering using inner nut

If you were to back off the outer nut, then hold the inner nut in place, then put a wrench on the Stud itself & screw it in or out, that would be the COARSE adjustment.

Gotta ask what is the adjustment or what is it adjusting? I know left and right is with the drag link for the steering wheel but not sure what it’s adjusting. Mine came out not sure why and got caught on the steering column and gouged it. I screwed it back in (the stud) but didn’t seem to go very far and tightened the nut. Both nuts loosened and tightened together? Any ideas appreciated

The stud appears to go into the power steering pump itself
