So I'm very excited to be the owner of a new 2012 1500 crew cab Laramie. After I got it home and got over the initial excitement I started looking over all the features to ensure I knew all I needed. And long story short I noticed a couple things missing that I sorta assumed would be on an almost 50k truck. Namely a trailer hitch and a LSD. The hitch was easy to fix obviously but the LSD I need help with. I found the unit below and want to make sure it's the right one. I also plan on installing it myself. Is that possible? I have never even seen the inside of a diff but it can't be that hard, or can it? Guidance please.

Welcome to the forum. Not sure of an answer on this, but I'll bump it for others to chime in.

that will not work on your 2012. In 2011 they changed the rear diff and no longer use the 9.25. Your only option right now would be to try to get one through the dealer's parts department and have it installed.

Thanks. The website says it goes up to 2011? That's not right? Any idea what size the new diff is?

They changed the diff part way through the 2011 production year. The new diff is similar in size, but made by a different manufacturer (ZF), and the LSD and ring and pinion are different and not interchangeable. No one makes an aftermarket LSD or ring and pinion for the new diff yet.

well Chrysler (or Dodge or Ram or whoever) is doing a good job of shutting out the aftermarket on the 12's! no tuners, no diff's or gears, and apparently they changed just enough of the suspension to make the 2011 lift kits not work either. Oh well i'm sure the aftermarket will catch up eventually.

I wouldn't try the gear install yourself if you've never done it before. Setting the lash and proper installation of the pinion crush sleeve is a big part in the longevity of the gear set and is something that could be easily overlooked or performed incorrectly.
Gear upgrade is one of those things that most people suck up and pay to have installed by a pro

i agree with txbass, the installing of lsd and or gears is not a straight forward easy swap for a novice.

on a side note, those of us with 2011's know your pain with the tuner :shooter:
