What's up guys? So I made a little mistake and put a couple magnets on my tailgate. They were only on there for a week before I took them off to wash my truck this afternoon. That's when I found that the hot summer sun had baked them a bit and lightly blemished the clearcoat. While it's not very noticeable, it bothers me. I tried waxing with mothers cleaner wax by hand for about an hour and while it did help.. Some of the marks are still a little visible from certain angles. By hand, the marks don't feel rough or different from the undamaged areas which makes me think it can be buffed out with the right product. Has anybody else made this mistake?? And what did you do to correct it?

I tried to get a pic but because it is so light it's nearly impossible. It really just looks like smudged clearcoat or something. I haven't tried clay bar. That may be my next attempt

Need pics, but I bet if you leave it in the sun for a few days, it'll un-cloud and look fine again on its own.

Ram paint is the worst. It seems to chip and scratch way easier than any other vehicle I've ever owned. And I've owned a lot. I also have bubbles coming up on one of my fenders. They'll warrantee it and repaint the fender when I show it to them, but c'mon. Really?

Cleaner wax was the wrong approach. You will need to get that off of there, and use a rubbing compound to even out the clear coat. Most likely they etched it. Then you can apply wax after you've gotten rid of the marks.

I can def try rubbing compound too. I was thinking that I must just be using the wrong product because the marks aren't deep or rough.. I was actually surprised when the marks wouldn't come off. I had a Tacoma before and had the same magnets on it off and on for a few months a year and never made a mark on it. :/ oh well. Thanks for all the responses guys

Ya if you compound it then wax it again it will go away. I had that happen on my 13. You can use a light polishing compound an that will probably take it out if its that light you may not even need rubbing compound. I have a few buffers and I just used a light compund for swirls and mine was good as new. I agree the paint in these trucks isn't great. I have had several other trucks like a ranger, old explorer, and a Silverado when I used to do cable for Comcast and some electrical work and always had magnetic signs on them in the hot Florida sun and never had a problem I had one on my ram for 2 weeks and had to polish the shadows out.

I would certainly try using a light/ fine polishing compound first.

Rubbing Compound? Good grief?!

Detailer's Secret: Glass stovetop polish for the win. Super light polish, perfect for this sort of thing.

Don't misinterpret the "Heavy Duty" part, it's designed to not cut into or scuff glass. If you even want blend a few drops to 1 drop of water and use a decent polishing/waxing cloth and you'll be fine.

Oh yeah my parents use this stuff on their stove. It works great on there and I could definitely see it working in this situation. Thanks bro

Smokey, it sounds as though you have had the magnet display for a time. Might I suggest applying a small piece of clear shipping tape to the magnet, then apply the display on to your truck surface. The tape can be renewed before each use and should not transfer any grit onto the surface of the paint. The other other advantage is that if the painted surface has some film or light grit it will enbed into the tape thus minimizeing any damage.

Good luck
