Hey guys,

So I just changed my oil on my 2012 5.7 1500. I used Mobil 1 5w20 full synthetic and a wix 57899xp filter. After I was finished I started it up and oil started flooding out from under it so I killed the engine right away. It looks like it’s coming from the filter. I have been changing my own oil for over 20 years and have never had anything like this happen. The filter was on hand tight and went on easily so not cross threaded. I also checked the old filter and it had its gasket so that was not stuck on there like I’ve read can happen. All I had time to do was put some sand down before it started getting dark out. Tomorrow I will do more investigating but if there’s something that any of you know of to look at in particular please let me know. Thanks!

I’d bet the o-ring from the previous filter is still on the filter housing. Ask me how I know....

Had a Fram do that to me once - and I didn't have a a forgotten gasket left on the filter spud!

Wix QC has been well respected. Could be the 1 in a million 6 sigma failure can, or could be bought out and lowered quality.

Less likely, wrong or defective filter. I had one where the insides were too close to the base plate. The threads on the mount bottomed out before the o-ring touched the filter mount.

Well I guess is was a faulty filter. Today I swapped the Wix with a Mobil 1 M1-210A filter and everything looking good. The Wix filter looks like it has one or two fewer threads than the Mobil 1. I don’t know ‍♂️. Oreillys exchanged the filters which was cool even though I lost about 4 quarts of oil. At least it’s not leaking anymore. Thanks for the input guys!
