I saw somewhere that the Fram HP16 is a cross for the RP 20-820 filter.

Anyone here use it?

Unless there is something different about the filter you mentioned, myself I wouldn't put Fram on a lawnmower. I have seen too many videos of different Fram filters be dissected, compared to other filters. The last time I used a Fram was many, many years ago. Just my opinion.

I had no idea. Like I said, the previous owner used these drive up oil change places, the filter was extremely small, and god knows what oil they put in it. I have been using Royal Purple HPS 5w20, and went back to the original Mopar filter. It had 157K when I got it, now 171K miles. As for the filter, should I stick to Mopar or try a different one?
I tried the drive up oil change places twice. First time, they stole an AC compressor coil clutch kit still in the box. I didn't notice until much later so I couldn't go back. The second time, they left the cap on the power steering reservoir loose and it fell off on the route back home.
Not good experience with fast oil change places ............. Then there is the issue of what off brand oil are they dumping in?

There are 2 Fram filters that are often used and recommended but I don't know the part numbers for them. One is "Fram Ultra Synthetic" and can be found in the OEM and oversize. The other is "Fram Endurance" and also comes in both sizes but the Endurance can only be found at Walmart.
Both are very efficient and full synthetic media. Maybe someone will add that info.

That would be the XG2 and the FE2, I currently use the FE2 in my Ram.

Reason I asked is I saw a cross reference for the Royal Purple 20-820, and it listed the HP16 as a cross.

Looking at the specs, the media is a blend, so might not be the best to use.

When I looked up some detail on the HP16 i saw "high flow" and "94% efficiency"
The 94% seemed like something I would want to stay away from, but there was not mention as to micron levels either

EDIT: Amazon has that HP16 for over $25 US. I can buy 2 RP 20-820 for that price, but not from Amazon. $25 will buy you a really good filter and I'm not sure the HP16 is it.
I could be wrong, I've done it before, and I've seen me do it. :emotions33:

Yeah I saw that 94% rating to 20 microns as well.

  • "Low-restriction synthetic blend racing media designed for high oil flow. The media features 94% efficiency @20 microns for excellent engine protection**"

In the RP site, they say the 20-820 efficiency is 99% for particle size of 25 microns, I kinda take that to mean at 20 microns, it too, is less efficient.

"The 100% synthetic micro-glass media we use to make Extended Life filters provides superior particle removal – with 99% filtration efficiency at as small as 25 microns. As a result the difference between Royal Purple and conventional oil filters is staggering."

But we all know what happens when we "assume"...... lol.

@Burla, what do you see comparing the specs of the RP 20-820 to the Fram HP16?

It's cellulous/syn, so as long as there is pure spun glass I don't see getting this. It is a racing filter, so it is like built to last 2-3 hours, but I'm sure it would be good for a short interval, decent bypass kick in psi. It's like nearly ten bucks more the RP even at 18 bucks? Walmart on sale is 25 bucks and Amazon price 25 bucks for a paper filter/

Fram is way better now I guess..I've read alot on the stories about Fram..another member(Burla maybe?forgive me if im wrong,I dont remember) posted awhile back about tests done on all these filters...the Fram Xg2(Fe2 is newer i believe)numbers were right with Royal Purples offering maybe a tick better...I've ran that since mainly cause I'm a cheap on certain things and walmart always carries both xg and fe now here, ive tried both the oil and the filter from RP.couldnt see a difference other than my wallet.oil analysis would but i dont do that.i run M1 now,i just change every 4-5k religiously and I'm still good.2010 model also....fingers crossed and knocking on wood.....
now that I think about it I forgot to rotate my tires at the time of the oil change:doh2:...just changed the oil 2 weeks ago...dangit!!

Fram “Extra Guard” are cheap filters…and should be avoided. Bargain Basement filters are also usually low-quality. Use them on lawn mowers and such, but not on expensive equipment or vehicles. Price is a good gauge to use.

Fram’s higher-priced models, such as “Ultra Guard” “Tough Guard” “Ultra Synthetic” and “Endurance” are fine filters, as good as anyone’s. You get what you pay-for. When it comes to filters…. don’t go “cheap”.

Major brands such as Baldwin (a Parker-Hannifin USA made brand), Fleetguard (Cummins), Mobil1, AC-Delco, Wix, etc. and All OEMs such as Toyota, Honda, Mopar are fine.

“Designer” filters are usually OK…but are gimmicks to get more of your money without meaningful benefit. (Royal Purple, K&N, etc) I personally avoid them and prefer the Major Brands and OEM already mentioned.

Just a quick question--which may have already been asked--How many of y'all trust Amazon when ordering your oil filters. Do you think they are the real deal or Chinese knockoffs packaged to look like name-brand filters?
Thanks

Anyone ever tried a MicroGard Select oil filter? It’s supposedly 99% filtration at 25 microns which is same as 20-820. Not sure if the build quality is the same but maybe someone on here knows more about them

Amazon, or anyone? My local wally's skells switch FE filters with cheap models so they can pay less. The one thing about Amazon, you at least know it is off the shelf and not switched, but yeah knock offs happen. Maybe AI will fix it some day, lol. Corey got a bad batch of the fabled royal purple 20-820's, I forgot where he bought them, @Hemi395 . I'm not really sure on the answers, but I would wager poor quality parts is something we will be living with across the board.

My cases I bought from Amazon have been great, for the penny that's worth.

It all would depend on who is filling the order Amazon or a well known retailer, if its fulfilled by Amazon or some unknown reseller no way would I trust it, there be way too many China made junk filters being sold as being quality filters, why are so many willing too take a chance save $3-5.00 an risk $10K or more the cost for an engine replacement...

Got to love the weasel words MicroGard uses like: " 95-99% efficiency ratings (depending on model)" also no where did I see where they are made or who makes the filtering media, to be selling at such low prices my guess they be made in China...
