I'm guessing the difference between the 27 previous cars that shifted into drive when the shifter is put into drive were actually manually shifted by the lever. A rotating know on the dash is not. Turning it to D and having the light show you have selected D might not mean the programming has allowed the shift. Just like flooring the gas pedal now doest necessarily equate to wide open throttle. Drive by wire. The computer will decide if and when to apply input.
Thank you.

Trying to change gears while the vehicle is moving, whether doin a few mph or less than 1....just does not make sense to me whatsoever. I don't care how super-duper advanced the vehicle transmission system is.

Just for my own peace of mind and how I was taught, I will ALWAYS make sure I am stopped and it is FULLY engaged in the CORRECT gear.

That way...I don't run into things.

Like other other cars.

I got into a bad habit at work when I had a Crown Vic, I would slam the gearshift into drive while still moving backwards from reverse. Why, because I could. Those things were tanks and could take the abuse. Found out the new Taurus isn't so receptive to that so much like the Vic was. I don't have the courage to try it in my new truck, nor do I want too inadvertently out of habit! Apparently according to this, and from what I've read, NOT a good idea!

I couldn't tell if this was posted or not here- but this is by design. Sort of. Hear me out.

Take your ram out and start rolling forward in drive. Then try to shift into reverse. Or reverse to drive. Or park. Whatver- while rolling without slowing. It will show the exact same error and will not shift. It is protecting itself from that exact situation that can cause so much extra wear or failure on the transmissions with mechanical linkage. Since the 8 spd is completely electronic- it can over ride you and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. I think, in all the other times you have done this, this is the one time you got caught. I suspect you were just a tiny bit past the rolling threshold and the transmission decided it was smarter than you. And- not to sound like a ****- it was. You should have applied the brake rather than tap it. I am not preaching. I have been guilty of this too and it's how I learned the "attitude" of SkyNet's transmission.
