So about a year ago (11k miles) I swapped my 183k engine for a remanufactured one. A few months ago I started to hear a loud tapping noise coming from the passenger side engine. I figured it was a cracked exhaust manifold so I replaced it. There was a crack so i figured it was a simple fix. Didn't take the tapping noise away. The noise isn't always there and seems to be random. I'll hear it cold or after the engine warms up. Sometimes it'll go away after a hour or so of driving. Also, when the engine is making that noise I'll have a loss of power too. When it goes away power returns. Any insight will be appreciated.

Sounds like you might be in the market for a new cam and lifters fairly soon

Any codes?

I've seen something like this when a MDS lifter intermittently would, and sometimes wouldn't come out of MDS mode when it was supposed to. Could also be caused by a bad MDS solenoid. Both of those should set some codes.

Remanufactured means lifters of unknown brand and provenance. Could be the high mileage OEM lifters from the core they rebuilt, could be aftermarket, but likely is NOT new, OEM.

Man I hope that's not the case.

I didn't notice your profile says it's a 2004. I just assumed that it was a 2019+ because this is the 5th gen forum.

Your 2004 truck is a 3rd gen.

Than being said, I don't think the pre VVT hemi trucks had the same propensity to eat cams/lifters as the 2009+ engines with the big VVT tunnel right under the cam, blocking oil flow.

But that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Maybe you should poke around with a harbor freight stethoscope, stick it to various areas of the head/block/intake and see if you can narrow down whereabouts it's coming from.
