I'm getting ready to order a '21 limited. What are your thoughts on the split tailgate? Gimmick or real functionality?d

Going in tomorrow to talk to the dealer and spec it out. I'll post the build once I get it on paper.

Also, no Uconnect 5 for '21's :-(

I love my truck but I'm not gonna lie, a little jealous here... Lol. I've seen it in use, it's convenient not having to lean over the dropped tailgate to get into the bed.

I messed around with one at the dealer waiting to get the oil changed in mine. I see it positives for sure but depending on how you use your truck it's the durability that would concern me. I load my four wheeler into the bed an on occasion haul 57 rock or clay not to mention using the tailgate for other things. Time will tell I guess the longer they are out there

It is freakin awesome. Rated at 2k pounds also!

I would be pissed if i did not get it. Glad i did because you cannot add it later.
But how do you really feel? LOL.. That's a rave review, I've got that tailgate on my list for the next truck.

I have it and really like it. As mentioned, access to mid-bed is really easy. The only downside is that the aftermarkets haven't seem to come up with compatible covers yet.

Let me expand a bit...
It really depends on what you would use the truck for. I am a camper so i have rambox and the tailgate.
I guess you can call me a metro jethro.
If I was into construction. Shoveling rocks and dirt or mulch all the time or maybe the constant immanent danger of being damaged then a normal tailgate would be better.
But normal homeowner, weekend warrior it is fantastic. And the mopar cover works on it quite well.

EDIT: And seeing you are going limited, i highly doubt it is going to see construction sites. Get it.

Hahahaha..., yea, won't be hauling rock with my new limited. I know a lot of "real" truck guys may dis, someone like me, but I'm looking for a luxury truck, that I can haul lumber in once in a while. Although, I will use it for work, as I shoot video and photography for a living (technically retired, but my side-gig has turned into another business). So, I have decided on the Ram boxes, and after reading these reply's, will likely go with the tailgate as well. I want the bed divider and the ease of opening a door to access my gear. So, the tailgate looks like a viable option.

Wish me luck... and I'll report back with a build sheet once I get it.

Thanks for all the feedback!

-Brad

Since it still operates as a conventional tailgate I'm not seeing any real downside to it other then the additional price (and a little additional weight)? If I was in the market for a new truck I would get one.

I do worry about it leaking though, as I will be hauling video gear. But only from job to job, so not storing it. So, a little water shouldn't be a problem.

What kind of bed cover will you have? I'd be more concerned about a bit of water coming in between the bed covering and the top of the tailgate.

I think the MFT makes sense especially for people who use their bed more as a trunk than more traditional truck usages like loading tons of rock and dirty stuff in the back. I plan to order it with the MFT.

I guess it would somewhat depend on how much that option costs. All I know is that the difference in weight between the 4th and 5th gen tailgates is massive. I even have the tailgate shock on mine and it weighs a ton compared to my buddies 5th gen tailgate.

I am looking at one of the tri-fold types. Haven't settled on one yet, but that's likely the direction I'll take. Again, it doesn't have to seal up like a vault, just keep the majority of water out. All of my gear is in Pelican cases, so it's already protected to a large degree.

You'll be fine if you're in hard cases, I have the OEM Vinyl tri-fold.

I’m just “meh” with this side opening tailgate. I like the GM one better...where it pulls down to a step.

Don’t get me wrong, it seems ok, and if I had the chance to order it, I would...but I can just feel that there will be alignment issues down the road with it.
