When looking at my next truck, I weighed the functionality/if I'd use it vs that seam in my tailgate. I decided the seam would bug me, so that is about the only option my new 2020 does not have. Call me OCD if you must.

I've seen several trucks with that option, and most of them were misaligned (one side slightly higher than the other). Though they might be functional, that would bug me.

IF I had the choice, I would have gotten, but I bought MY 19 in Aug 2018 when they 1st hit market. Now, if U R not hauling rock, and not too worried about the bed functionality, with all that Video and stuff, I would do a full fiberglass tonneau. Just my preference, since I have one.

The MFT will be great for hauling rock dirt and stone too

You can open both sides and wont have it getting stuck in between the tailgate and bed.

Once the HD gets the MFT and news about another BGE hits the market...i will be purchasing

I’m just “meh” with this side opening tailgate. I like the GM one better...where it pulls down to a step.

Don’t get me wrong, it seems ok, and if I had the chance to order it, I would...but I can just feel that there will be alignment issues down the road with it.

Hope you're wrong about "down the road"... I just ordered one!

I hope I’m wrong too. Congrats. If I do have the option to get one and I can afford it, I would get one as well.

It's like most other innovations, most people look at it a bit sideways for a while. I'm sure it'll be fine.

Have to agree. I’ve followed a couple on the road. The seam just isn’t something I could live with even though I couldn’t see it on my own truck while driving.

But you'd know it was back there, being all uneven and whatnot. :boxed:

Haha...try using that fancy GMC tailgate step when you have a trailer hooked up to the truck. Oops, can't do that. It's not a problem with the MFT. Open it up and use the step that's built into the bumper.

I've used the Ram MFT quite a bit, since my girlfriend's Limited has that. I wish I would have gotten it on my truck, but I had a higher priority on other options. It's not just convenient for grocery getters. I've loaded tools and building supplies in the back, and it's very nice not having to reach over the tailgate when loading and unloading whatever you put back there. It's definitely heavier than a traditional tailgate, and takes a little more effort to close. As far as the gap goes, after six months the fit on hers is nearly perfect, and hasn't changed since she bought it. I would have spent the extra $1000 for the MFT if I would have known how useful it really is. IMHO, the fancy GMC tailgate is nothing more than a sales gimic, and comes in a distant second to the Ram MFT for actual usefulness.

When I went to do a build with the multifunction tailgate it added $3,635 to the MSRP for the truck as to get it I had to order the tailgate for $995 AND the Level 1 Equipment Group for an additional $1,795 AND the Bed Utility Group for $845. I like the new tailgate but feel like I am being asked to bend over and take it from Ram. To many other ways to deal with loads in the bed of the truck that provide more utility at less cost.

I agree as well. Not crazy about the look. But I went with function over form. It will serve a purpose for me, so I decided to go for it.

Is guess if you were wanting an absolutely bare bones stripped down truck that would be an issue. When I looked at the packages required to get the tailgate they were things I would be getting anyway (and pretty basic stuff) so in the end it would only be a $995 up charge for the tailgate.
I agree though, you can't just buy that 1 option if you want it. But it's been like that for years and years on all vehicles, it's not just a Ram thing.

I'm pretty much the odd man out here. Would I get it, hard no. I have compromised mobility now due to knee injuries that are healing, and yet I still have no issue with a normal tailgate. Hell I wouldn't even want the soft drop or a deezee tailgate assist, waste of money. If you can't lower a tailgate without dropping it, you shouldn't be driving a truck in the first place. The tailgate on my 19 classic ram weighs less than on my old 07 ranger, really don't understand the fascination with soft drop, and now multi function gates. It's just more **** to screw up down the road after you use it for a bit.

Get out of her odd man!

Just kidding. If it had been optional, I wouldn't have paid money for the tailgate assist or a few other little features. But they were included, so I'll take 'em. Even without the assist, I can tell you that the tailgate on these 5th gens is lighter than my 4th gen (2014) tailgate was.

I understand this in theory, but it doesn't hold water when you consider the complexity of these trucks. Adding a simple tailgate assist or slightly less simple MFT is just a drop in the bucket compared with how complex everything else on these trucks is. The days of fixing your own truck are pretty much a thing of the past unless you have some of the scanners and other tools that are necessary to work on them. Not saying it's not possible, but it's a lot more involved than it used to be. Adding a couple of things that are mostly mechanical is nothing in the grand scheme of things. The days of saying it's just a truck are long gone.

There is always going to be those people that are anti-everything. They would still be using manual roll up windows just to prove a point. (whatever point that is?). And by the way, I've had more manual windows come off the track or handles break then I have ever had issues with power windows in my 40+ years of owning vehicles.

My truck is a daily driver/farm truck. I added tailgate assist to mine and use it all the time. Am I strong enough to let it down without it? Absolutely but why? Now I can come up to the truck with bags of feed over my shoulder and open it and let it drop without slamming and without putting anything down. I can also have my young kids just open it and not worry about it coming down and hitting them in the head. It's not a "lazy" thing at all, it's very functional.

Same for that new tailgate. Would love to walk up and just grab the bags of feed or equipment out instead of trying to reach in and drag them out to the edge of the tailgate before I can lift them out. Would also would make it a heck of a lot easier to forklift a pallet out of the back of my truck.

I think alot of people over look what is needed to add an option.

You can not just add the sunroof. You also need the overhead console for the control. Same deal for the sliding rear window.

It is why a tradesman...that can really use RamBox and mft doesnt get it

I think with the 5th Gen though they did a good job with their bundles and standalone options

I have a 2007 Honda Ridgeline with the dual action tailgate, drops down or swings open and I love it. I wish my 2016 Lonestar had that gate. It's great for access and it's easier to get up into the truck bed. I plan to buy a new Ram in another year or two and it will definitely have the multi-function tailgate.

I'm getting ready to order a '21 limited. What are your thoughts on the split tailgate? Gimmick or real functionality?d

Going in tomorrow to talk to the dealer and spec it out. I'll post the build once I get it on paper.

Also, no Uconnect 5 for '21's :-(
I have a 2020 Longhorn with split tailgate. The wife loves it as she it is a lot easier for her to load rather than bending over. It is functional and glad that I got it. I have a Diamondback SE cover and the tailgate works perfect with it.
