Whatever happened to the days when a 4x4 from the factory actually looked that way ? I’m not referring to HD trucks on up, I’m solely talking light duty ones. Now I know a 1500 compared to a F**d will look smaller, but it’s like as soon as we get these trucks lifts and tires seem to be the must have lol.

Maybe I’m just getting taller in my older years so trucks are looking shorter ha ha ha. This thread in no way is bashing anyone’s truck, just an observation on my part.

Trucks use to be made to work, and sold that way. Now they’re made to be sold and cater to the twice a year truck user. In turn, we have complaints of gas mileage while everyone always knew, trucks in comparison to cars got bad gas mileage, they’re heavier.

Then there is the tech....everyone wants it so manufacturers compete with getting it into their latest offering all the while they know, it is not automotive proven, let alone that many do not even understand what it does and how to use it. Truck users of yester-year wanted a reliable tool, if you had AC, you were in a high class truck.

You and I are just getting wise in our years. ;) and things don’t seem to make much sense lately. Common sense has left the building.

I think the vehicles of today are still the best ever made. Just
think back to the 60's and all the maintenance required just to get them to 100k.

Large majority of trucks now a days wont ever see any offroad action. I know mine wont. They're daily drivers now with extra utility. I haul all kinds of **** in mine but at the same time if I couldnt jump in it and drive 400 highway miles comfortably I probably wont have bought it.

Sadly, I can't park my stock 2018 at the airport, clearance pipe hits the windshield. 1500's are easy to drive and park.

Just keep it here. I’m enjoying the true heart felt words of what our trucks were supposed to be for.

I’d much rather fiddle with a carb and change the oil every 3k than deal with today’s issues.

There is definitely something to be said for that! If my first truck started miss-firing, it would take about 10 minutes to narrow it down (fuel? spark? air? compression?), with this one, I need a supercomputer, a schematic and a whole lot of lucky easter egging just to figure out which sensor, electronic gizmo or computer is screwing up. You'd think with all the fail-safes and limp causing sensors on these engines, it would be impossible for them to hurt themselves because they would shut themselves before anything catastrophic happens.

Your observation is certainly correct. The 1500's today have definitely been given a bit of an "SUV" treatment. I'm glad Ram has the offroad package on the new 5th gen, but I honestly think this package should have just included the full 2" Mopar lift. Even if the price of the option was a little more than it is. That lift would be essential on the truck IMO. It isn't much either, but it's just how the truck should come I think.

This is why I have all but made up my mind that I will probably only buy HD trucks from now on. Solid axles, higher ground clearance and heavy weight are important things to me in a pickup. You just can't get that in a 1500 anymore. And if I didn't need a truck anymore I would probably buy a Jeep or the upcoming Durango. It is definitely good that Ram added in an E-locker and upgraded T-cases for the 5th gen though.

I don't think we can blame the manufacturers for this. They are building what sells and what needs to meet efficiency regulations. Most people buy the 1500 pick ups as pretty much an SUV. Lots of people have no issue jumping into a 1500 but they get a look on their face like aliens are about to take over earth when you mention owning an HD truck lol.

I agree. Many of us could fix our own back then. I remember my Fords were famous for burning points. About every 20,000 miles had to put a new set in. PCV valves were also a problem. Carb adjustments were common especially for big elevation changes. Remember vapor lock? And you were lucky if you hit 100k with no major drivetrain problems. Even though most of us cant fix our new vehicles it seems that they don't need repairs as often and 200k is now the norm, not the exception.
