Finally got the OK that all the paper work was ready. Drive 3.5h into northern Idaho, picked her up and drove all the way back home. Long day! But what an awesome drive home!

What Ultra said! I've got one coming and would like your thoughts on the 8 speed.

Congrats! Like Hemi Joe, Ultra 2287 & Chewy I would love some feed back and initial thoughts on the 8 speed.

Transmission notes so far:

I'm still in engine break in period so no towing, AND no cruise control.

I live in Washington state and drive to northern Idaho to pick up the truck, so all told I drove the truck for 3.5h last night. Almost all highway.

I reset the MPG before leaving the dealerships. By the time I returned home, I made 18.6MPG. If you've been to N Idaho, you know it's very mountainous which didn't help MPG. I used cruise control for exactly 5minute on the way home and could tell it was doing a better job at fuel efficiency than I could. So I'm excited to see what flat interstate and Cruise Control will do MPG.

We stopped for coffee and dinner, so I got a short chance to drive at town speeds with stop lights. The tranny's shift points were very noteworthy. I'm used to driving manual tranny sports cars (vette/s60r), so I know what a standard (short gear ratio) RPM drops sounds like (rpm change when changing gears) . The torqueflight8 has a very short RPM drop. Depending on your experience, you might not notice but it was very evident to me, since I shift by sound.

Also, it was obviously trying to keep the engine power output to the minimum power required for fuel efficiency. I typically hate auto tranny's because of when they change gears. They are either all or nothing, and never shift when I expect them to which often makes me feel out of control (or mad/scared). The torqueflight8 felt very good to me, it felt like the same choices I would make with a stick shift. Quick decisive shifts, always smooth power transfer. I was very impressed, which is saying something.

Rotary knob:
This was a concern at first to me. I didn't know if I would like this. I thought I would prefer the center shifter. However, now that I've used it I am a fan. Someone in the user experience group spent a lot of time thinking through this one little knob. It has a very "well built" feel to it. Very specific detents. You can't spin it past drive nor past park. Also can you shift out of park without the brake depressed. It frees up a lot of console space, and it does look cool. You won't be disappointed.

At lot about the truck impressed me last night. I can't wait to have an excuse to drive today.

ALSO. All you with pending orders: You might want to touch base with your dealerships, I found out from mine that they are having trouble meeting the demand for 8speeds and are starting to auto substitute the 6speed to fulfill orders. If you've ordered an torque8; I'd go make sure you are still getting one.

Thanks Justin! If my truck comes in without an 8 I won't take it. I'm sure they just substitute for lot vehicles, but I'd hope they'd say something to people that ordered theirs a specific way like I did.

For those asking about the transmission... I drove one today with the 8 speed. I had tested a Laramie with the 6 speed and was not overly impressed. But with the 8.... VERY nice. I'm about 95% sure now I'll be switching from Chevy to a Ram. This one also had the air suspension so it was a rare combo for sure. The rotary shifter quickly became second nature. I thought I would not like it, but it works really well. The 6 speed I drove had the floor shift - absolutely no way in you-know-where I'd buy one of those, that was a royal pain.

Hope that helps.

Does the 8 speed also come in the 3500 ? Oh wait, lol. Nevermind..... Looking over my order it states right there in black and white "6-sod Automatic 68RFE Transmission :) sorry I'm new to the ram world. I just ordered my truck on the 21st of march. Dealer believed it would be an 8 week wait :-(

That's a good transmission, you'll like it.

The 68RFE was introduced in 2007 Ram 2500 and 3500 Pickups with the 6.7L Cummins ISB Diesel engine. It is not currently used in 2007-present Ram 3500/4500/5500 cab chassis. Transmission in these models is the Aisin AS68RC.

The basic design and operation is the same or similar to the 45 and 545RFE counterparts with the following exceptions:

larger bellhousing with different bolt pattern and cutout to accommodate diesel engine
modified internal components to handle increased torque of diesel engine
revised gear ratios and Transmission Controller programming for larger application
no 2nd gear prime for downshifting like the 45RFE and 545RFE transmissions
Gear Ratios:
1st 3.23:1
2nd 1.83:1
3rd 1.41:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.81:1
6th 0.62:1
Reverse 4.44:1
Applications:

2007–present Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Pickup (6.7L Cummins ISB Diesel)

I had the option of going with the aisin!! We went out and talked to the head diesel mechanic in the shop, and after I explained to him what I would typically be doing with the truck, he recommended sticking with the 68 rfe. I agreed. I don't pull cattle, mainly just a pallet of heavy ass tile a few times a week, between 2200-3300 lbs a pallet and anywhere between 10-30 miles hauling it. And I pull my trailer occasionally with a vehicle project on it.
