So, is there room for improvement for this? This was with Meguiar's Gold, no machine involvement.

As long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters. To be critical, take some pics on a sunny day or under some good light, and much closer. Either way, since you worked on it, you know if it has defects and swirls or not.

No swirls, but there are some minor defects. I think I may hand it to a pro before I go at it with a machine.

shine is subjective, IMO. Like Kinetic said, if you're happy with it, go with it. I've spent 16 hrs shining my truck. it's not perfect, but I'm happy with it.

A cheap electric buffer is what I use and just let it glide changing the bonnets often. Swirling mainly happens because of the bonnet getting clogged up and dirty.
When I wax/polish my truck I use about 15 bonnets and 6-7 foam pads.
