To All,
I need help desperately, I have a 2002 Dodge pickup 1500 (5.9 V8) and I am at a lost. So here is my problem, about a couple of months ago I stopped off at the boss’s office for a 15 min talk. When I arrived back at the truck and attempted to start the vehicle there was no sound. The truck powered up but it was not cranking over. My initial response was to check the battery. I played around with the terminals and slammed the hood; load and behold it turned over right away and I was on my way. The second time this happen, was about 2 weeks after the first incident; I was on my way home and everything was running fine, however when I stopped at a store the truck would not fire up. I sat there for awhile trying to kick it over but with no such luck; then finally it kicked over. At first, I thought it was just a fluke but I went on to another store and it did it again. This time I was a little worried because it took awhile to finally kick over but it did. I managed to get it home and I parked it. A couple of weeks after the second incident, I went out and attempted to turn it over but there was absolutely nothing. Although, I did remember on a jeep Cherokee I had the same thing happen to me, but it was the crank position sensor that was acting up. So I went online and started doing research on where the crank or cam position sensors were located on my vehicle. So it’s been awhile (a month) since I messed with my pickup, it’s been sitting in my parking lot wasting away. But just yesterday I went out and attempted to start the pick-up and low and behold the damn thing kicked over. Hell, I went out there today and again it fired up. So now I am really confused? What do I need to do to keep it going? As you all Dodge lovers know, if you turn over the ignition switch three times it will give you a semi-diagnostic check of the pick-up and mine read P0307 & P0838. Any advice would be helpful – thank you for reading!

To add to my last post -- I bought the pickup in 2012 and have never done anything to it but changed the oil and a O2 sensor in it --- so this should really up the discussion.

Next time it does not turn over, try putting the transmission in neutral. Code 0838 isn't in the stickies buy p0850 is and that is a neutral safety switch fault.

P0838....Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Switch Circuit Low
P0307....Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected

At least that's what Google came up with. My guess would be the 4wd switch or wiring for it.

Also don't forget to check all your main power connections. A bad ground can affect getting proper amps to the starter even though you have enough power for cab lights, gauges, radio, etc...
